Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

"est-ce que" is essentially a question phrase. It includes the inverse of "c'est". So when you use the inverse and when you use "est-ce que" it automatically implies a question.

And if there's a "est-ce que", the following words have to be subject + verb, but if not, it's the opposite (verb + subject)
Here, the question "Jusqu'où il doit aller ?" is incorrect, even if some french people can say that

it's informal, not incorrect

#

it wouldn't be accepted for something like an essay

#

but it's one of the 3 ways of creating a question in french:

  1. Inversion (Jusqu'où doit-il aller?) - formal, rare outside of formal contexts
  2. Est-ce que (Jusqu'où est-ce qu'il doit aller?) - neutral, acceptable in all contexts
  3. Intonation (Jusqu'où il doit aller? - informal/oral, not accepted in very formal contexts
#

"est-ce que" functions similarly to English "do", which is used to avoid inversion with the main verb
e.g. "Do you go to the store?" instead of "Go you to the store?" which has been deprecated in most contexts

j'viens de me faire un autre exemple :

  • Jusqu'où va-t-il aller ?
  • Jusqu'où il va aller ?
Là la première me semble même bien plus courante que de rajouter un "est-ce que", et la seconde est réellement moche, en plus d'être inutilement compliquée à prononcer

ton entourage ne dirait pas un truc du genre "Tu veux quoi?"

#

?

timid salmon
#

si, pour la simple et bonne raison que c'est très court à dire

#

dans notre autre exemple on inverse juste l'ordre des mots, y'a autant à prononcer
