Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
"tu as fini ?" would mean "did you finish?"
"tu **l'**as fini ?" means "did you finish it?"
but isn’t tu as you have?
"tu as fini" is the passé composé tense. Which corresponds to the past tense in English.
Tu finis = you finish (present tense)
Tu as fini = you finished (past tense)
So if it's a question, it becomes
Tu as fini ? = Did you finish?
ah ok merci
« Tu as fini » can be translated using the present perfect ‘I have finished’ but it’s really context dependent
The main difference between the simple past and present perfect is relevancy or how the past action still has ramifications to now. For example, take the sentence, ‘I’ve turned off the lights’. The lights were on and then at some point I turned them off, and its consequences – the lights being off – continue to now.
