Is it because it sounds more natural? Or is there a rule around it like how you follow up imparfait + si with conditional

Second one is correct, first one isn't.
"C'est comme on retournera" is incorrect. To mean "like" in the sense of "as if", we say "comme si", not just "comme". And "si" is followed by imparfait.
"au case départ" is also incorrect. "Case" is feminine, so it would be "à la case départ ". "Au point de départ" means the same thing
