Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
"boredom" is called ennui in french
"s'ennuyer" (pronominal verb) means "to be bored" --> "Je m'ennuie" = "I am bored"
If someone refers to something as "ennuyant" in french, they could mean that this something is boring them.
It is actually the present participle of ennuyer
So "ennuyant" would be closer to "boring" than "boredom"
Note that "ennuyant" can also have a meaning of "bothersome".
oh the présent participe, i see
ennuyeux is the adjectif related to ennui
im kinda new i dont now what the présent participe is being used for, so i will have to look this up first but thanks i didnt notice
so you could say:
"It is a boring movie" = "C'est un film ennuyeux"
"The movie was boring" = "Le film était ennuyant"
it usually corresponds to a form in -ing that comes after another verb
and you use "était" cuz the film took kinda long right?
you could use passé simple, "le film fut ennuyant", it would still be correct, but it would sound very outdated
And the imparfait brings a nuance of a longer action in the past
yeah exactly
But with current spoken french, the passé simple is barely used, as opposed to passé composé and imparfait
you'll find it more in written texts
