adding the pronoun "y" adds an emphasis. In, English you'd probably say

1: Je pense à la mort = I think about death.
2: j'y pense à la mort = I do think about death.

it's a stylistic choice in French to add redundancy.

adding a comma after "mort" such as "j'y pense, à la mort etc.." adds a break and a prepositional clause but doesn't kill the redundancy because "y" is anaphoric (aforementioned).
