Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
I need to learn to when to use j'ai or je suis
That's simple:
- J'ai: Je (I) + ai (avoir, to have)
- Je suis: Je (I) + suis (être, to be)
J'ai is therefore 'I have' and 'Je suis' is 'I am'.
ah ok, so when beginning certain sentences, when do you use j'ai or je suis then like why is it proper to use j'ai to say your age than say je suis etc or is it just because it's just "there" or..?
When do you use 'I am' and when do you use 'I have' in English? Same thing.
French just says 'to have an age' instead of 'being an age'.
A few things will be phrased differently in French, requiring 'to have' when English uses 'to be' (or the inverse), but those are fixed expressions and you'll learn them.
Ça a du sens..... Merci pour votre aide!
