Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
im just asking cuz chatgpt told me "demie" is only for 12-hours time formats
Lawless French clarifies that even though the "official" rule is only with 12-hour times, native francophones do what they want
That's ultimately how any language works lol. "Rules" might say one thing, but natives say whatever sounds right to them.
Eventually the rules are forced to change
yeah i see, but like if i say quatorze herues et demie. Every native would understand right?
Yeah, they'd understand for sure. You might get weird looks/corrected though, as a non-native speaker
This is one thing I still regularly mess up beause my mouth is going faster than my brain
you will absolutely be understood
but people might smirk
haha
alright thats all i needed to know
We don't get the same leeway with these kinds of "errors" as learners 🥲
That being said, if it's on an exam, you abosolutely want to follow the rule
'cause a teacher would mark it wrong
okay idk i think the youtube video was more for spoken french then
how would you say it like correct for an exam
or that people dont smirk xd
LLOL ok
the woman in the video said its like wrong
or "deux heures et demie (de l'après midi)"
ah yeah ok
merci beaucoup
one last question, do you pronounce the "six" 6 the same way as usual when saying the time? cuz i heard at the calender for instance you prounounce it different like "si"
https://www.reddit.com/r/French/comments/f0lye1/how_is_six_pronounced_in_french/
It depends what follows the number
This article goes into a good bit of detail, but it's in French only https://vitrinelinguistique.oqlf.gouv.qc.ca/23137/la-prononciation/prononciation-des-nombres/prononciation-de-six-et-dix
i would say "14htrente" and "2h et demi"
but if someone says "14h et demi" i won't care enough to correct anyone, bc it doesn't sound too bizarre if it makes sense
