Here, in English, there’s a “null” partitive article.
I have cheese.
I have cake.
I have pasta.
Yup makes sense so far
In French you need to explicitly state the partitive.
J’ai du fromage.
J’ai du gâteau.
J’ai des pâtes.
no, du is “de + le” where de is a preposition, but it’s also simply a partitive article
