Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
être + infinitive is not correct afaik
it's always être + past participle
"ils/elles ont fait" doesn't have an 's' at the end because "ont" = avoir auxiliary so you don't conjugate in this case
Ces dessins ont été faits
Here faits takes an S because it is used as an adjective. They have been done. Note that we use "ont été" and not "ont étaient" because we use the past participle.
thanks for the explanation and for correcting me on "être + past participle"
Basically 'ont été faits' = 'être faits' in the past, therefore we conjugate as with the être verb
While 'ont fait' is 'avoir fait' in the past, so we don't conjugate the past participle with the avoir auxiliary
ah i didn't know / forgot that the past participle remains invariable when using the "avoir"
well it remains invariable unless the COD is placed before the auxiliary
as in "la maison que tu as achetée"
then you conjugate with the object (la maison)
John a acheté une maison / La maison que John a achetée
Ils ont mangé des pâtes / Les pâtes qu'ils ont mangées
got it. and just to confirm, the conjugation is always required in the case of using "etre" as the auxiliary verb
correct?
yes
except for some verbs 😄
Elle s'est offert une moto.
don't worry too much about it, you'll see this when studying les 'verbes pronominaux'
Pronominal verbs simply act like avoir verbs, despite using être
Pas toujours, elle s’est occupée de ...
en quoi ça contredit ce que j'ai dit?
"se" est un COD dans ta phrase
donc on fait l'accord... comme avec l'auxiliaire avoir
