Not really related to the question but is it grammatically correct to write "j'ai besoin un peu d'aide" or does it have to be "j'ai besoin d'un peu d'aide"?

You do need the preposition there. Nouns back to back with nothing in-between is normally a no-no so you need to insert a preposition and eventually an article between them.
