#How do i identify direct and indirect objects?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
By how they're used:
I gave the man a handshake.
First, find the verb: to give.
To find the direct object: what was given?
Answer: a handshake.
To find the indirect object: who else was affected by the action?
Answer: The man (because he received the handshake/direct object).
Verbs affect the direct object and indirectly affect the indirect object. The subject is the one performing the action.
oh
ok thanks
i think i got it
so the action is being done on the indirect object
and it receives the direct object
The other way around.
The direct object is directly affected by the action.
Unless you're dealing with pronouns, just check if there's a preposition before the object or not.
« Je donne le cadeau à Marc. »
Two objects, « le cadeau » and « Marc ». Does the first object have a preposition? No, so it's direct. Does the second object have a preposition? Yes, so it's indirect.
Je le lui donne?
The real challenge is when you're dealing with first and second person object pronouns, « me, te, nous, vous » because their indirect/direct forms are the same.
yup
ok
yeah
Je donne le cadeau à Marc
=> Je le lui donne.
« Je te vois, Marc. »
I see you, Marc.
« Je te parle, Marc. »
I'm talking to you, Marc.
yeah
Thing is, for you to know whether a verb takes a direct or indirect verbs is just memorisation
