I think that celle-ci and celle-là are used there to refer to proximity/a distance in terms of time, with celle-ci referring to an event that happened to a timeframe closer to ours (ie, the tower of Babel), and celle-là to an event preceding it (ie, the rupture between humans and animals after the Flood)

At least that's what makes more sense, given that the events related to the Tower of Babel happened long after the Flood
