Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
the second one
Why is the first one wrong
if an adjective normally follows the noun, such as « mûres » in our case, then it also follows the noun when it’s in superlative form
for example, you wouldn’t say “la plus intéressante question”
instead, you’d say “la question la plus intéressante”
Oh thank you very much I got it
no problem 👍
So the adjectives are only placed before the noun when we have to describe someone's beauty, age, goodness or size right?
if you had an adjective that precedes the noun, such as « grand », « beau », « nouveau », etc…, you can either place the superlative before or after the noun
both are equally correct
however, placing the superlative before the noun is stronger and more emphatic
But wouldn't it change the meaning of the sentence
Not in the case of superlatives but otherwise I suppose it would?
for example, you could say…
- Le plus grand arbre
- L’arbre le plus grand
notice that if the superlative is placed before the noun, there’s only one definite article
i don’t think it changes the meaning though
the two examples i provided above mean the exact same thing lol
do you have an example where you think the meaning might change?
Look for example
Ma voiture est propre - my car is clean
J'ai ma propre voiture - I have my own car
well, here you can’t make a superlative adverb out of “own”
Another example might be
Cet homme est grand - this man is tall
C'est un grand homme - he is a great man
Yeah I'm not talking about the superlative in that case
I'm asking normally
hmm…
Without the superlatives
ah okay
well, yes
some French adjectives can change meaning depending on their placement
just like in the examples you provided
here’s a page that lists most of these adjectives
So in the superlatives it's always factually correct to put the adjective before the noun?
Okay so you put it after the noun
You said put it before the noun earlier 😭
i said you put the superlative after the noun if the adjective comes after the noun 😭
and that you can put the superlative either after or before the noun if the adjective can go before the noun
If the adjective comes before the noun then will it be stronger and emphatic if we put the superlative before the noun
yep
