Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

I need to use the 2 of the 4 semi auxiliary verbs in this particular sentence: devoir, pouvoir, vouloir, savoir.

vous ...... suivre ce cours, et vous ...... vous inscrire, alors?

semi-auxiliary verbs are just verbs that can be followed by an infinitive of another verb to influence their meaning.

devoir + infinitive => need to + verb
pouvoir + infinitive => can + verb
vouloir + infinitive => want to + verb
savoir + infinitive => know how to + verb

#

note: there are more than 4 semi auxiliary verbs, but those are probably the most common ones

understood, this question is asking me for 2 out of those 4 options though. im mostly confused on which verb would fit in "vous ..... vous inscrire alors"

how would you translate this sentence (without the blank verb ofc)?

inland nebula
#

you register then?

#

So, without the blank verbs, what would the whole sentence be?

inland nebula
#

you follow that course and you register then?

simple beacon
#

suivre un cours = take a course (class) btw

#

French uses a different verb

fierce terrace
#

using this as a basis, what would be the most natural modals to use before each verb?

#

(honestly two can fit for the first one)

simple beacon
#

With that in mind, what would be the best way to complete the sentence?
'You … take the class and so you … register [for it]'

inland nebula
#

pouvez et devez?

simple beacon
#

Why those two and why in that order?

inland nebula
#

pouvoir is a possibility, and to take a class you need to register, so devoir no?

simple beacon
#

Okay great

inland nebula
#

wait so am i right

simple beacon
#

Yeah. I originally thought of it the other way around but your interpretation sounds valid too to my ears

just to confirm, savoir or vouloir would not fit in any context right?

fierce terrace

"vous devez/voulez suivre ce cours, et vous voulez vous inscrire, alors?" would have been my guesses
so you want to / need to take this class, wanna register then?

My guess was:
« Vous devez suivre ce cours et vous pouvez/voulez vous inscrire, alors ? »
