Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
No real difference except that the standard French azerty keyboard doesn't have « or » lol
So when typing on a French keyboard you just have to use " and "
Software like Word will automatically change the quotes to the French ones, but in writing you can see moth
And if you're putting a quote within a quote it can be handy to have both at your disposal
That would be handy in English too 😅
English uses "double with 'single' inside"
Though it gets a bit annoying when one of the single quotes is at the beginning or end
Otherwise used the same way as « guillemets with "double" inside »
English may be my native language but I was never good at it 😅
American* English
British English is the other way around, preferring ‘single quotes for main quotes and “double quotes” for inside ones’ though that’s changing due to American influence
From what I've learned recently it's basically all Englishes except British English that use the double quotes outside and single quotes inside lol
Australian English follows British usage
I wasn't just talking about Australian, but I saw a recent reddit post where an Australian literally said their usage was double on the outside
and I happen to be in VC with @real heath who's telling me that he uses double quotes as well (northern ireland, sorry doxx)
it's in my rôle dw
To be fair, it is changing, but I wouldn’t say that all varieties but British English uses double outside, single inside.

Indeed, although I don't know how much I'd trust style guides for current usage
I think American influence has probably pushed most online stuff to the double-quotes standard
Online, probably, but traditional and official stuff still goes with single outside/double inside though for media publications that’s going to depend more on which style guide the organisation is using
