Hi! First of all, my English isn't perfect so I might have to be fact checked on that but I believe "I will give myself pain" isn't a correct translation of : "je me donnerai de la peine". As shown here : https://www.wordreference.com/fren/se donner de la peine, "se donner de la peine" is a set phrase to mean "to make an effort". There is another expression that is very close : "se donner la peine de" which conveys the meaning of "to take the trouble to do [sth]" (as if the person went out of their way to do do sth).
