salut
ahh
avoir confiance en = to trust
the phrase means I only trust him
@tawny cloud sry late reply, i was watching something
and en in this case means in
it's literal transcription is i have trust in him
only^ nakalimutan ko ilapag only
qu' or que means only in this case
the full expression is ne..que
think of it as not more than
example:
Je ne mange que de pain
du* my bad
meaning i only eat bread
or literally
i don't eat anything than bread
so in the case of your example, the complete phrase is:
Je n'ai confiance qu'en lui
ibig sabihin nyan:
I only trust him
I have nothing but trust in him
meron pa nga yan actualy eh
ne... plus que
parang ganto pagkasunod-sunod:
Il y a 10 personnes actuellement
Il n'en reste que 5.
Il n'en reste plus que 3.
there are 10 people -> there are only 5 -> there are only 3 (im not sure how to emphasize ung pangatlo kasi prng wlng ganun sa english)
Whoa hi!! I didn’t know there was a channel for this! I only know like five words in Tagalog 😢 it’s my bf’s parents’ language. Is Wikang similar or the same thing?
Salamat
Do you have suggestions on affordable learning resources? I have trouble finding anything
@cerulean pawn have you used this channel?
No, sadly I haven't actually.
What is wikang?
Language.
It's actually one and the same.
Historically, Filipino is just Tagalog (the regional dialect) but renamed/rebranded (with a bit of modification from other dialects) so that the whole country will use it. Thank Manuel Quezon.
Which year?
Hmm, tough question.
1946, apparently.
Matulog kayong maigi para lahat ng natutunan ay nakatatak sa isipan.
Good night.
Anyhoo, I can't seem to find my old Learning modules. What I have found is resource from reddit by this one fella commenter though one of their links does not work. (So I decided to do a workaround and looked for the specific book within the collection that the commenter was referring to, and I found that it only had one book on tagalog as the others were for other dialects). Thank you, now I go back to french because mon francais tres mallade.

or
Oh thanks!! I’ll look into them
I also rediscovered an application just called Tagalog. It only has vocab and no grammar, but that’s helpful a little
@muted rivet do you talk here?
They sent me some resources but I haven’t looked through them all yet
Hopefully some are good!
Oh Dang, there's a Filipino channel here
See, here's the thing. I'm the wrong bloke to ask 'cause I only learned Filipino when I was in uni, so I learned it pretty late
Im going to see how many words I can remember. Maybe I’ll add some other days
Hindi no
Oo yes
Salamut thanks
Po respect added
Mawalang anuman you’re welcome? (Or napoor?)
Magandang gabi/umaga good morning /night
tubig=water
sisig a food from pigs 😂
Kwan thingamagig
so there’s hope! My bf doesn’t know it
Only understands a bit
Anon what
Si vous voulez apprende Tagalog, I think you should practice it avec ton petit ami
Okay Nevermind HAHAHAHA
Sisig top tier food, have you had it?
I love how
Maybe his relatives but they’re far. And his parents I don’t think would be super great at teaching. Maybe!
Of all the Filipino food, you only know sisig
Tell your boyfriend he found a keeper
I just forget the others
I also know the Filipino food… tubig 😂
Lol maybe
Ngl though "Mawalang anuman" is deep Tagalog, so that's cool
I know the fruit salad green jello dessert
For a second I was like "there's no way in hell she speaks better than me. Bon sang"
The app is telling me too many niche things
Lowkey If you say that to a Filipino, they'd be surprised too
Like paalam
His Lola was surprised when I said goodnight
Oh yeah I know Lola lolo Tita Tito kuya (?) ate
Yeah, I don't even remember when was the last time someone told me "Paalam"
We just say "Ingat" which is "Take care"
Paalam sounds deep HAHAHAHA
His fam was like… we just say bye
It's like you're saying goodbye like you're boutta die or sum
YEAH, THIS
"Paalam" LOWKEY SOUNDS SCARY BRUH
Like if one of my boys tells me "Paalam" I'd make sure I they're alright
Oh no
@ebon pilot you should call ton petit ami "Mahal"
I think it's the most endearing Tagalog word you can call someone
Like: “Paalam. See you in the next life” ?
YEAH, 'CAUSE IF YOU SAY PAALAM, IT'S LIKE YOU'RE SAYING GOODBYE FOREVER BRUH
Google says it means expensive lolol
Wait, no way you don't know Mahal yeettt
Bruh, your boyfriend would be surprised
Ok, so
Yes, "Mahal" is "Expensive"
But
If he knows it
Curious, of all the animals, why moose
Okay, thank you for explaining the lore
Yeaaah
NAH, FOR REAL THOUGH, TRY CALLING HIM "MAHAL"
My mom calls me honey and I say “bye bunny” so it’s like a joke off that
So is it like a descriptive word or a name like “dear”
If I ever enter a relationship again, I wanna be called an animal too, like Pink Fairy Armadillo, Western Lowland Gorilla, Pleasing Fungus Beetle
Yes. Moose lore
It's kinda like "Dear", yeah
Dear, Darling, Honey
It literally means "Love"
I think pleasing fungus beetle is probably endearing
I do love pleasing fungus from time to time
Maybe I’ll text him that because idk if I’d say it right
Like in Mario bruh?
Complete their side quests
Are you American?
Yeah, you can text him "Are you still awake Mahal" or sum
There’s no way he’s awake lol
LITERALLY ME
SORRY
WELL I FIGURED THAT BY NOW TOMATO
Lowkey "Good morning Mahal" would be tuff
😂
That's the kinda message we men would go to war for
I know. I’m not sweet enough
K fine will do
But I may need to include a laughing emoji…
NAH
WHAT
C'MON BRUH
Listen
If he sees that first thing when he wakes up
He'll have the energy to conquer at least 4 civilizations
K but I only asked because you said you learned Tagalog in uni. So idk is English your first language or something else
We're talking powerhouses like China, Russia, U.S.A., Pakistan
He can come for you first
Oh yes. We need to conquer USA. Canadas army is too weak
Yeah. My first language was English, then I learned Mandarin (which I don't speak anymore, mais je sais encore un peu). Then Tagalog in uni
I remember my mom got pissed at one of the faculty members back when I was a kid 'cause they thought I was mentally challenged for not knowing my country's language
The reason why Canada's army is weak is 'cause the men there don't have girlfriends who tell them "Good morning Mahal"
Oh my gosh rude
That faculty member might be cooking though 'cause I lowkey be questioning my thought process sometimes
I’m not romantic enough. Dude. We can’t even say “babe” with a straight face 😂
At least he’s self aware
😂
I’m assuming you’re late GenZ right?
This seems like a good time to say I have skibidi rizz
K wait
Morning is spelled umaga right?
Oh, man. Non
I'm guessing I'm 5 or so years older than you
Lolol
Oui, you got it
How old are you
25
ALLER DORMIR BRUH
I just thought you were younger because I’m less fluent in the GenZ slang than you
Probably due to a lack of TikTok
But I work with little children who teach me the genalpha ones
Je non parler francais
Je me couche a 10 ou 11 heures du soir
Mdr
NON
I don't have TikTok too
Idk how I adapted the yungins' way of speech
Lol
LET'S GOOOOO
So smart
The whole Philippines cheering for my guy
Fr, Pakistan better prepare
He is like the most peaceful person so this is so funny to imagine
Nah, man. Trust
When us guys get that kinda message, lowkey We'd be capable of achieving anything
Like you could tell your mans to create a brandnew planet first thing tomorrow, and you'd be surprised
Well he’d better do a good job of writing his speech and cleaning his house then
Maybe he’ll even go to the gym
K I’ll ask him to make a planet
That's lightwork, watch him build a new house from scratch
Okay WHY WOULD YOU SAY THAT ALREADY HAHAHAHAHA
YOU GOTTA LET HIM PROCESS IT FIRST
LET HIM ENJOY THE MOMENT
Okok I’ll delete and send after
IT'S LIKE YOU ALREADY SERVED HIM DESSERT, HE'S NOT EVEN DONE WITH THE MAIN COURSE
Bro is only smelling the seared scallops with brown butter and lemon pan sauce, and he already got served the lemon meringue pie
Yeah, I read a lot of Dr. Seuss back in the days
Oui. Aller dormir. C'est un plaisir de vous recontrer mon Canadian ami
Wow 😑
I guess I can only review
Wow, what a conversation above this. Nakakakilig na medyo cringe.
😂
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA DESOLE
Okay but actually we hit over 42C in Canada during a heat dome
Tomato. He only reacted with a heart emoji bahahaha
😂 I’ve gotta show him this conversation
Bro
Listen
When he read that
Word to my momma, he was rolling on his bed
Giggling, blushing
That was him Lowkey
Y'all Christians too?
Also you’ve gotta know we’ve been dating for a whilllle. So there’s still butterflies but maybe not that bad 😂
Man
Listen
Y’all call it youth group too? Mdr
You guys could be married for 40 years, and "magandang umaga Mahal" would still be tuff
I guess atheist youth don’t gather in groups
OKAYOKAY
Is there another term that I'm not aware of
'Cause
My church calls it youth group
Every church I been to calls it that
Yeah we’re Christian’s too lol. It’s just weird bc it has nothing distinctly Christian in it
Are you Protestant or Catholic ? I feel like youth group sounds Protestant
Lowkey sounds like a gang
Buuuut i already sent him screenshots 😂
2 days
He’ll get a kick out of it
Yeah we rarely talk on WhatsApp that’s why. I just write it there because all the other chats had different conversations going on
Forget creatine, man. Just call him Mahal everyday
I’ll have to tell him to have a good workout mahal all the time
Bro will have the sickest gym arc ever
I just don’t know if he’s got the context for it besides movies because he’s not around that much
I can comment on his gym app posts
I'm sure he knows what Mahal means
Yeah he knows
But it’s like « oh Riley’s just saying a word » rather than feeling the context. If that makes any sense
Or he think I don’t know what it means
I’ll lyk
But if he’s kicking his feet that would be nice
It would be… mabait
Hopefully that’s not talking about food
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Mabait is "nice", yeah, but not in that context
Dangit
If you say "mabait" it's you saying that he's a nice/kind/good person HAHAHAHAHA
Nah, nah
Well he would be a good person
I'm not sure if we have a word for good job
Masarap is food 😂
I just say "nice" too
K what about like « this is a positive situation »
EXACTEMENT
Okay, I'm boutta teach you some slangs
If there's a positive situation
I'd say
"Ayos"
It's like "good", but cooler
I know just like ayoooo
You're like a real g if you say "Ayos"
Haha his dad was saying « aya » for frustration in a board game. Then said « ay-no »
YEAH HAHAHAHAHA
We mostly say Ay though
Without the A at the end
It's like a sigh
Ayy
Ayyeah
You're gonna be more Filipino than your boyfriend in no time
He already said that mdr
But he laughs when he hears his family talking
so I know he understands
Like his titas at least
I will teach you how to speak Filipino/Tagalog like a real g
We gangsta out here
Instead of saying "Oo", you can say "Ge". It's short for "Sige" which means "Yes". You can even say "Gege"
BUT I LOVE HOW YOU KNOW "KWAN" THOUGH HAHAHAHAHA
Oh my
Yeah I googled it when he was annoyed at grandma for asking for the Kwan
A couple weeks ago
So when I talk to grandma ill be like « ge-po »
OH MY DAYS, IMAGINE SAYING "GE" TO LOLA
Is it pronounced like gee
Would she even know the slang
She would
😂
She already gave me a look for goodnight. Can you imagine slang
I'd say Opo if I'm speaking to an elder HAHAHAHAHA
"Ge" is something I'd say if I want to be super casual
EXACTEMENT
O yeah, you know how "Oo" is "Yes"? "Opo" is the same, but respectful. Instead of saying "Oo po" (since po is added for respect), you just say "Opo"
Lol I think I said po or kuya to my bf once to bug him about being older (barely) but it didn’t end up being that funny
Just chuckled
Like, normally if we get called "kuya" by our girlfriends, we'd give them a really weird look. It's a tease that gets us y'know
WAIT HAHAHAHAHA
You can call him "Manong"
Yeaaaah that makes sense
Lol
This right here? He's a Manong
Manong looking fresh though
I like his bling
I wonder what kinda lore this Manong has to deserve that fresh hat and bling
I did it
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
That guy doesn’t look thaaat old
Sophisticated gentleman ✨
YO, DO YOU KNOW WHAT "Pogi" MEANS
I think it was when he was explaining the words and I was like « hmmm so do I call you kuya »
Is it pog
My brother says pog
When you see him
Mdr
Is it pronounced like po
Professeur Tomate, PhD à Filipino
YEAH
Ok. My phones gonna die but I might return when I’m back
SALUT MON AMI CANADIEN
Paalam manong po. Magandang umaga/gabi. Salamut
Okay DON'T CALL ME MANONG
Mdr
Bruh I told you. He’s too Canadian for this
He said he knows what it means but didn’t grow up with it to feel the feelings
So saaaad
I guess I must use more creative means due to a lack of English vocabulary
Lol I did it. Creative English words work better
I bet he did the toe kicking
He did the message at youth group. It sounds so good! He’s saying a bunch of stories about his own failures and the kids are all gasping. He’s connecting it to the story of the master who forgives the worker and then the worker doesn’t forgive another person
Aww, dang it
So he won't be conquering anything
W boyfriend
@muted rivet does ayos also mean okay?
The app says “ayos lang ba” means is it okay
Also is ba “it” and lang “is”
Idk why this app is teaching me both paalam and ayos
It must be old or something ?
Okay wait. It says « ayos lang » is okay alright » and « ayos lang ba » is is it okay.
So ba just must make a phrase into a question
Is it all good?
It’s all good
Ayos lang ba?
Ayos lang
Can that be used as Kumusta ka or is ayos lang ba more specifically about checking if someone is hurt
Also what’s the different btwn kumusta and Kumusta ka
Nvm I figured it out. Ka is just « you » would you say « kayo » for formal
Bonjour, I think "kayo" may also mean "you and those with you". Which may lead to a bit of confusion, though "kayo" should work in cases like if the person you are talking to has relatives or friends with them so it basically means you are not only asking "how's it going? "to one person but also to those around them.
Should mean like
"How are you all doing?" Kumusta kayo.
Yeah, "Ayos" = "Okay" or "All right"
If you put "Ba", it makes it sound like a question
"Ayos lang ba" = "Is it okay?"
"Ayos lang" = "It's okay"
Also, since I was teaching you slangs yesterday, you can also say "Ays" instead of "Ayos"
You pronounce it like ice
If you wanna check in on someone, you can use either one of those
I'd say "Kumusta?" if I want to sound a bit sweet
If I'm talking to one of my homeboys, I'd say "Ays ka lang?" Since you know that "Ka" means "You"
Salamut
Does ays lang also mean how are you, or only ays ka lang?
Also, a bit of a side note. But some filipinos tend to often speak mainly in English with a few Tagalog words sprinkled around. That's where Taglish comes in. Though some here tend to stereotype it as conyo (rich people) language, which I don't really appreciate. So feel free to use English from time to time with a bit of Tagalog, I think a great majority of speakers should understand.
Cool!
It would be nice to understand a lot so I know what the older adults are saying at gatherings, but I don’t know if I’ll ever learn enough for that. We’ll see
salut tout le monde!!
je suis nouvelle sur ce serveur..
hi guys im clar!! wld love to meet pinoy frens here na also learning french :D
Hallo.
Ask ko lang po, iyan po ba'y mula sa video para sa pambansang awit ng pilipinas?
And are you Filipino ?
hmm im not sure but i know this is a popular meme
hahahahaha
I want to learn Tagalog so his family gatherings are more cohesive 😂 And I can surprise the titas
Im in BC
Awesome!
I only know a few but already kinda more than my bf 😂
I sent him a thing and he’s like « no comprendo »
im learning french for PR purposes
Niice
Were you born here?
These are basically what I know right now. Although I forget some of them
noooo i just moved here in 2023
Nice!
a lot of words already omg good job! the titas will be delighted
Hahaa
tell them "tita blooming ka ngayon"
it means theyre glowing, and becoming prettier than ever
But I also don’t know which contexts to really use mabait and mabuting mabuti
mabait means kind
I have to make sure they actually look nice that day
It said « good »
yesss but its used to describe the attitude of a person
"good" in tagalog is "mabuti"
liek in general
Ok so I can say mabait to this?
anywayss so u know french? or also learning french?
Or ayos lang..? Lol
Oui. Je sais français plus bien que Tagalog. Mais encore débutant
you can say "Ayos!" meaning thats great!, but honestly modern filipino is mostly taglish
tagalog-english
so my friends would just say 'niceee' HAHAHAH
or you can say "Mabuti naman" also meaning that's good
Is naman « that is »
explaining these phrases now makes me realize our language is kinda complicated too hahah
hmm its used in many ways..
yes yess
oh! moi aussi
j'ai commencé à apprendre le français en octobre dernier
my reading, writing and listening is lvl A2 but speaking is A1

il est difficile..
hmm thats weird
in no context does mabuti naman mean good luck
hhaahahahah
it can also be used when someones asking how are you? you then say "mabuti naman" meaning i'm fine
enfin bon, je vais dormir
Parler est très difficile !!
Bonne nuit 💕
Il est très stupide mdr
c'est vraii!!
Ah. Like
Ça va?
Ça va
So potential greetings:
kumusta
mabuti naman
Ayos ka lang
Y’all be m’apprendre
Tomate is out here trying to make me talk like a ganster with gege and ays
Nice, good thing I wasn't the only one who thought it looked ridiculous to present at the opening flag ceremony.
G. - (Short form of "Sige" though some may find it very jeje)
Definitely not.
Ays ka lang
'Cause it has "Ka", so you're refering to the other person
"Ays lang" literally means "It's good"
I wouldn't say "Jeje" means gangster. It's more cringe than it is being gangster lol
I don't think people would think you're jeje if you say "Ge", "Gege", "Ays", or "G"
It's like saying "Aight" or "Bet" in English. It's super casual, that's all
And ays ka lang
is
good you is
IF YOU'RE GONNA TRANSLATE IT WORD PER WORD HAHAHAHAHA YEAH
But maybe more gangster than Ravi
Most likely Yeah
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA HERE'S HOW I WOULD SAY THESE WORDS
❌ Hello
✅ Uy
✅ Salamat
❌ Walang anuman (You're welcome)
✅ It's all good
❌ Paalam (Goodbye)
✅ Ingat (Take care)
❌ Oo
✅ Oms
❌ Hindi
✅ Nah
❌ Magandang umaga
✅ Just say Good morning Bruh
❌ Magandang gabi
✅ Good evening
That app is teaching you words/phrases that most of us don't even use
Kumusta came from the Spanish como estas.
Yeah, use them to old-fashioned elders instead.
I mean the ka/you part. Does it mean the same either way
It's used colloquially, but is actually redundant grammatically, so yes, it basically has no difference.
Okay but 75% of my talking is with elders and 22% with people over 40
Also they immigrated 28 years ago, so they might not know some of the new stuff idk
"They might not know some of the new stuff" sounds like a software update for iPhones
The elders don't know what comes with Filipino version 10.7.6
Exactement
It’s weird how immigration works. People evolve in different directions. Like look at American compared to England and New Zealand
That wasn’t just immigration. But still
Kailan kayo puwede sa VC?
When will you be able to join a vc?
Hintay-hintay lang muna siguro, matagal pa kasi bago sumakses. Kailangan daw kasi step by the step muna. Malalaman din iyon kapag sumakses ka na eh.
Maybe I can in French but definitely not Tagalog
Dati sumasali ako sa vc as a listener lang
Yeah I did that today in French but it made people leave mdr. Too many silent people
Good for comprehension practice tho
Oh no, I missed it.
I suppose i could just listen to Tagalog for exposure. Hard when you understand zero though
You could try, and I could give some basic explanations.
kaya yan
We still need to burn more of our eyebrows. Either way, you got this!
A wise man once stated. "Grasshopper son, I will giant you."
Like the statement, we must giant even the hardest of challenges if we're gonna need to learn.
yez kaya yan guise!! bon courage 💪
Take your time. Be patient.
I've been learning for 1.5 years, and now I can read French newspapers.
Still can't speak anything past the very basics because of a lack of practice.
"Anak ng tipaklong, ipaghihigante kita."
Salut @ebon pilot !!! Ca va mon ami????
Salut mga kabayan!
Tomate
Hello
Ayos ba lang ka?😂
I forget if that’s right
Poor eyebrows!!
salut! et toi, kamusta ka naman?
Je vais bien! Lakas ng ulan sa lugar namin (la pluie est trop fort dans nos place)
Sa pilipinas ka?
oui!
(Pardon if Mon tagalog et francais n' est pas good. Englishero lang ako😅 )
Ouais mahirap ang weather talaga
May typhoon this time of the year?
okay lang! basta naiintindihan ko, swak na para sa'kin
c'est dur talaga to etudie dalawang different languages. Le grammar rules are mixing
oui, les typhons sûr cette époque d'année est très mauvaise. (Malala palagi ang mga bagyo sa mga ganitong bahagi ng taon)
Oh daccord stay safe okay! Nsan sa Filipinas ka?
je viens à de RNC 😀
RNC = Région de la Nationale Capitale
kaya mo 'yan! I believe in you
That's right! Magaling!
Ay youre not far from my place as well. I'm from Bagiou! ( je n'habite pas, jhabite a Doha)
According to my relatives living there the rain shows no mercy. Cest dur talaga
aussi, à chaque saison de la pluie, il fait froid là
Merci beaucoup Mon ami! I have to balance it or else risk the consequences hehe.
Focus too much on tagalog I neglect my interest in French. Focus too much on French, walang patriotism ako😂 😭
mga 8-15°C talaga 'yung température kapag rainy season
Ouais but cest is bearable compared to the beacoup chaud. Jaime froid. Walang sweat atleast😭
I went to bagiou last year atleast the heat and cold come in intervals. When I went to Manila mainit talaga it affects my mood😭
But I like the city so mas prefer ako sa manila especially BGC
oh wow!
Wait... manila is in RNC right
je ne sais pas how le whole region thing works hehe....
yes! la ville de la Manila
there's grammatical genders 😭
in everything
Pardon pour mon compréhension du Philippines. I do not know it very much. I spend most of my time in Doha et NYC
So I always forget until my lolas and lolas enlighten me HAHA
But I know Joze Rizal rest assured 🙏
c'est d'accord! je comprends
Di ko gets yon. Atleast not entirely. Very specific ang francais. Tmas maraming to memorise and study. Almost seems impossible.
Merci merci!
Yes, but remember that every language is unique and works as well as the others. It's the pinnacle of one's identity. 😁
Anyways, how did you get into French? (d'ailleurs, comment as-tu fait dans le langue français?)
Off the top of my head, I must say I truly appreciate the sentiment. I’ve always held a fondness for the French language, so I’m making a genuine effort to learn it well. As for Tagalog, I recognise the importance of understanding my roots, and I’m earnestly studying that too. It does get rather complex though, as it’s not only Tagalog I need to consider but also several regional dialects I feel I ought to learn in order to fully grow into and honour my ancestry
The dialects are illocano and kankeneyey.
Car moi, j'ai eu le sujet comme un l'option à l'école est quand je tombée amoureuse dans ma l'études 😍
I hope you don’t mind me switching to English the thought process is getting pretty complex for me to express well in French or Tagalog.
As for your question, my love for French started back in 7th grade. I had a kind teacher who made the language feel like an invitation, not a subject.
I’ll admit, being young, my interest came and went. But lately, ive rekindled the spark and picked up right where I left off.
I started digging for my old notes, using duolingo and joining this group. So that's a start.
awww! 🥹 je me suis senti ça dedans ma cœur. Naiintindihan ko talaga!
La pluie revient 💀
I'm glad we could relate to one another!
Pluie, pluie s'en aller, cône encore un autre jour
désolé pour briser le mood
By all means nothing is broken 🙏
I was simply being genuine in my expression of speech.
C'est pareil comme moi!
Tu connais le chanson « où est ma tête » ou vous faites écouter cette chanson?
Pardon, non je ne sais pas
Cest un tagalog/English ou francais song?
Pardon pour mon late reply. Jai travaille time to time. But rest assured je reply!
C'est un chanson français, et le première chanson cette j'ai appris, donc, le chanson est très memorable à moi : )
j'étudient les langues et linguistiques, des cultures générale vers histoire, musique surtout jouer des instruments, et plus. 😃
Bien bien! quel instrument joues-tu?
la guitare, principalement
des n'importes que de musique je trouve sons bien!
Je me suis réveillé très tôt ce matin (à Manila)
Oh tu as un generic taste. Tres Bonne
Bonjour! Tu as bonne matin!
Kaya nga eh! HAHAHA
Have you ever combined Filipino and French ? Like « Taglish »
bonjour ! tu viens d'où ?
Cest nuit la ou jhabite hehe
Jhabite a Doha, Qatar, principalement. Parfois je suis a New York City, Manhattan.
Javais actually hehe. For the first time of my life, I did taga-french in this group. Technically English in the sentence so taga-fre-ish
waouh 😮 nous sommes si très loin
Oauis, du Qatar the time difference est 6 hours behind le Philippines. Pour NYC the time difference est 12 hours behind.
quand tu dors, je me réveille hehe
Vers le langue filipino, le mot « sa » est un mot avoir les plus usages. C'est-à-dire le mot cela trop fort!
juste une pensée 😅
Bonjour! Pardon mon late reply.
Je comprend why cest
Le grande du utiliser
para mas maintindihan natin 'yung mga prepositions and such
Sometimes, I can't even decide what language am I supposed to use. I'm kinda like doing code-switching between those. mdrrrrr
I'm honestly doing the best I can in French. But at the end of the day I always resort to Google translate.
Especially for simple words like "but" "too" "if" and other connecting words. So I always have to use #🌈anglais-français ou #🐟franglish
I'm just not ready for #français-débutant
😔
You’ll get there! @open ravine
Kaya mo 'yan!
Whats'up fellow Fil-Can, san kayong province? NB here
Hello good afternoon.. Tanong ko lang paano kayo nagkaroon ng motivation to study French? (sorry if not the right tagalog word, tagalog is not my native language)
At ano gamit nyo to learn French please. Thank you sa sasagot 😊
Salut mon ami! Je suis debutante like you!
Dw tagalog isn't my first language nor is it a language I even know how to speak fluently (But I understand enough not to be sold off😅).
I'd say motivation comes from alot of things. Specifically in my case, my motivation comes from my love of the culture and the sound of the language pleases me so. French is also a subject I've been introduced to from a very young age so it's something I've got to get exposed to and appreciate. So thinking of learning something I like to hear and whose culture I love helps me push to keep learning. Additionly, plus pogi points for both family and girls- can't get a better motivation than that😅🤣 But ultimately you interest is a good start, but the end is your motivation. Your means are inspired by the end you wish to achieve!
I use duolingo, my school used to provide a learning language website called Rossett stone, I watch videos on YouTube, I buy French kids books, sometimes I just switch my browser language to French and hope for the best.
Also this server is so helpful and insightful! I learned so much just by being here for like 3 days.
Thank you for your reply😊 the thing is I am currently in France and even if I am everyday hearing French I still am not in the point of really being into the language. I find it hard to understand and it stresses me 😅 hopefully I will get to the level as some people here, like how they are just comfortable speaking the language even though not in a perfect way yet. 😁
I understand your situation. I also find it intimidating to listen to actual fluent speakers who use alot of slang, shortcuts and not to mention the speed of their conversation. I also hope to be able to understand it one day. That can be one other motivation of many!
I think you can get more confident with time
Thank you so much for all your reply and encouragement 😊hopefully I can do this💪🏻
kamusta ! je suis back ulit, wanna chat ?
UY PHILIPPINES
salut tout la monde! bagong akong member dito et honnêtement j'ai besoin de pratiquer la langue tagalog, en particulier de écrire parce que je peux comprendre et parler la langue, mais i dont write or read it often
i am wayy better at tagalog tho than français et sometimes quand je pratique la langue français c'est mon instinct to mix in tagalog kasi my mind is in foreign language mode alors je parle troi langue
Kamusta:)
Crazy having to know three languages to read this 😂
pour moi je pense que c'est more fun to speak in multiple languages at the same time. i understand tagalog most when its taglish, and when i discovered franglish it was soo fun and mind blowing
mais i cant mix english with everything so i have to get more comfortable speaking in pure tagalog or pure french at some point 😞
and if a bit more tagalog is used, sometimes you can see spanish alors c'est quatre langues!
Mdrr
i love languages
Well if you used anymore Tagalog I’d have been lost and Google translate might have a hard time 😂
I practiced some Tagalog words today
Unfortunately most are probably ones not really used. Like old fashioned ones
good job!
yess i wish older tagalog words were still used, but sadly its hard to speak tagalog without any english at all because its modernized
buts thats also the beauty of evolving languages
I want to understand my bf’s family when they don’t speak English 😂
Maybe should watch movies
But I’m grasping at nothing
Maybe need children’s movies
may i ask, whats your relationship with tagalog and french, and your level of knowledge?
pour moi, i usually tell others that im fluent in tagalog since it was my first language, but really im fluent in taglish and i have difficulty with tagalog grammar since i never learned it at school just with family
ohhh i can help you!
French I did in school and Duolingo
are you filipino or do you just wanna learn the language?
I’m white Canadian but my bf’s family is Filipino. He doesn’t speak much either though
definitely watch modern tv shows and movies because theres enough english to understand the context but a lot of tagalog to be immersed
Lol he just figured out “Kwan”. He was annoyed with his lola for not saying the item in English, but then realized she literally just was saying thingamajig
OMG THATS SO REAL
filipinos loveee to use "ano" or "kwan" as placeholders for things they dont remember
Do you think his fam’s Tagalog would be oldish because they haven’t been in the Philippines much for 28 years? Idek what the evolution of that would look like
WHICH IS A LOT AHAHAH
kwan is definitely older Tagalog which only my grandma uses, i would say middle age and younger use more modern tagalog
the uh ano… the kwan… over there points with mouth
Most of his Tagalog speak relatives are 40+
honestly probably since they mostly just speak with relatives i assume
but not really old vocabulary they just use less english words
😂 his Lola turned around and gave a shocked look when I said magandang gabi
I think the reactions are worth it
thats soo funny ur kinda iconic for that
I’ll try to recall what I remember
Masama bad
Bukas tomorrow
Ito this
Masarap ito this is delicious
Ate/Kuya tita/tito lolo/lola
ayos lang it’s fine
Ayos lang ba is it ok?
Mabuhuy congrats?
Magangdaga(?) bati awesome
Mabait good
Mabuti it’s good/fine
mabuting mabuti very good
So many M’s
Mahal kitah I love you
Wanumun acunum welcome (spelled wrong)
Walang nagalam napoor excuse me
Paki please
Hindi no
Oo yes
A lot are spelled wrong
This is more words than I thought
Salamat ty
masama is bad
mabuhay has multiple uses, its kinda like long live! definitely used in celebration
maganda means beautiful which i think is what you are trying to get at? idrk what word you are referencing, but a good word to use for awesome is ayos, kinda meaning okay or neat? if you say ayos as an exclamation like ayos! then its closer to awesome!
Oh yeah. Well if you need to say sorry the situation is probably bad ahahah
there is no direct translation for sorry that is used often tbh. most people use "sorry" or "sorry po" but a common one in tagalog is also "pasensya na" which kinda means "have patience with me/ i'm sorry"
Ohhh yes there was something similar to pasensya na and I kept mixing it up with masama
Oh yeah aso/pusa dog cat
Tubig water
also the reason why there is a lot of m's is because it is often used in suffixes like the suffix "ma-" this is more grammar which im not that familiar with since i usually just go with what sounds right LOL. ma- as a suffix kinda means the quality of. so mabait comes from the root word bait, meaning good. maganda comes from the root word ganda, meaning beauty
this definitely comes from the more complexities of tagalog which is why its such a hard language, but u honestly dont need to worry about it to much as a beginner! just wanted to explain lol
Ooo cool
Just grammar just like where/when to have a ko or a ba is already a lot remembering
The grammar is v different
yess there is soo many suffixes and prefixes is tagalog. its so difficult and even i dont understand it at all 😭
if you think french has difficult conjugations then oh boy you dont know tagalog. theres a variation for every word. not just verbs 😭
honestly i dont understand your translation for welcome or excuse me 😭 if i dont understand anything i realize they could also be speaking a different dialect of filipino
Wait I’m realizing I meant maganda bati for awesome. Because it rhymes with panda and pandas are awesome. Could still be wrong though
I spelled them pretty wrong
That’s true. But also these are from a pretty low quality app
I wish it was on Duolingo
Or something of similar quality
bro im soo mad duolingo doesnt have tagalog. i swear i tried it there once but i think they removed it
No way
They have Tagalog to English
Honestly you could probably try that.
But you have to reconfigure the whole app
filipino learning materials are soo scarce and really the best method is to learn it with a speaker or immerse yourself with media.
ive only tried a few learning apps for tagalog just to see how it is, and i will say that a lot use outdated words which is probably what you are encountering
Need some motivator for people to make more resources
soo much of the language is mixed in with other languages which is what people end up using
They probably didn’t speak the language themselves and googled lists of words mdr
its also why people sometimes call it filipino not tagalog! because some people see tagalog as "pure tagalog" and thats just not really spoken commonly. filipino is what the government is calling it because really the language is mixed in with 30% spanish, a lot of english, and even some chinese i think?
i mean thats what u get from being colonized three times!
also i think i just realized what you mean for welcome (as in your welcome when someone says thank you) and the word is walang anuman
this also is older and not really used often as someone who is exposed to tagalog all the time. had to ask my aunt this because i just didnt know what the direct translation is for your welcome after someone says "salamat (thank you)"
and for excuse me i also have no idea what the translation. most people say "excuse me" or "excuse me po" in a Filipino accent lol
Yes mdr
just asked my mom and its "mawalang-galang po" so ur actually on the right track!
or mawalang galang na po is more formal
adding po at the end of any sentence basically makes anything more polite
That one I learned a long time ago and got rusty
especially to older people. you only use po for older people, for example, its rude to say oo to elders and instead you should say opo
Thank you po
Well I’ll assume you’re old 😂
Then can say po
I bet you’re younger
probably mdrr, i think it can also be used for strangers so i think its fine
And tita/ate for older too right? (Depending how old)
also fun word to know but ur prob not gonna use it much is "tabi tabi po" it means excuse me, but only to spirits! there is a lott of mythology in the philippines, so if u r walking out in the dark, and maybe walking past a forest, you would say "tabi tabi po" meaning excuse me to be polite to the spirits (so you dont get cursed)
yess
ate means older sister and tita means aunt
I can fight the spirits
but filipinos are very friendly with each other so u can use ate for anyone older than u, but closer in age! and tita for anyone like your parents age
I’m forgetting the word I’m thinking
Rebuke. That’s the word. I’ll rebuke the spirits 😂
filipino titas are vain tho so call them ate if you wanna compliment them and basically imply they look younger LOL
Oh myyyy
Sooo if they’re like 20 years older that’s kinda at a point you can decide?
Maybe 15
yeah those are probably tita
Idk there’s one lady we call are but she’s 39. Maybe it’s because my bf is slightly older than me and he grew up calling her that
use this lightheartedly though because sometimes if they are suplada (snobbish) they may think ur trying to kiss up to them
yeah you can call them ate if thats what your bf calls them!
But the 45yo is Tita lol
yes
They’re so close in age but seem far
depending on ur age gap ofc but im assuming you're in ur 20s?
Yeah I’m 25
30s you can probably call ate cuz they are in the stage when people are transitioning from calling them ate to tita and its a common joke that its so ego deflating when people no longer call u ate anymore lol
Also this is bc the younger one lives in Vancouver and dresses young and stylish
yup yup definitely ate
Aw. Yeah I can see that
Do you call someone one year older ate
mmm yes i would say if they are more traditional? you dont always need to though
im from america so most of the filipinos i know around my age are americanized and dont really care about honorifics at all. but usually yes someone one year older than you is ate
I made a joke about calling his brother kuya because he’s a couple months older than me 😂 He was like noo
He doesn’t like that his brothers older than me
omg loll yeah some people dont like honorifics cuz they dont wanna feel old haha
Well it’s more bc his bro is closer to my age than him and he like his little brother lol
But also yeah
It’s only a two year ago gap but still
aww
bonne nuit!
ayos lang naman !
je suis très busy pour le dernière 12hrs. Je suis fatigué 😌
grâce à naman, biyernes na ! 😄
« naman » kind of acts like a grammatical particle
« Biyernes » is the word for « Friday »
it's rooted to the Spanish language !
Like faire in French, how it’s used for a lot?
yes! I suppose
for example:
"ayos lang naman ako!"
(I'm just fine!)
"ayos lang ako"
(I'm just fine!)
It kind of acts like a word that emphasizes the subject! 😀
Yes! that's true, thanks!
one more grammatical particle that I can think of in Filipino is « ba » and « pa »
these can change the meanings of sentences/phrases depending on how and where you place it!
Ba makes it a question right?
Can you give me some examples of a similar sentence with and without pa?
in some cases, yes!
Ayos lang ba:)
sure thing!
isa pa ba ?
(one more time ?)
isa ba ?
(is it one ?)
yes! that's perfect! 😁
grammatical particles in this language are really powerful!
I can see!
So pa kinda says “more”
yes, in most cases
How would you say “yes one more time?”
Maybe Oo, isa pa
that's also correct! but to affirm the person talking to you, you can also say:
"Sige, isa pa!"
But sige is more casual right?
Like for friends
I want to mostly learn more formal versions for talking to older people
yes! speaking of yes'es
Opo - formal yes
Oo - informal yes
Sige - formal/informal "affirmative" yes
Ohh interesting
For example:
Sige po ! (sure thing ! [for the elderly people])
So it’s just the “ge” that’s very informal 😂
Tomate was mentioning gangster talk or whatever. Not actually gangster . Like cool chill stuff
Sige ba! (let's go! or sure thing!) [for the friends/acquaintances in a casual setting]
and it solely depends on the context
I mean yes, that's so true lol
anything else you wanna know about the language?
Actually, "ge" can also be used as an internet or a spoken slang
Idk what I need to know 😂
Maybe I need like a better vocab list to make flashcards with
Need some nouns and verbs maybe
I know a few greeting phrases but more would be good. Just common phrases and words
But I could have something from online, it’s just most of those seem to not have applicable or accurate phrases
Here are some Filipino words we certainly use in our daily lives: 😄
ako - I
ikaw - you
siya - he/she (it's a gender-neutral pronoun)
tayo - we
sila - they
ito - this/it
fortunately, the Filipino language does not have gendered nouns like in French
Ka/kayo are also forms of you right?
Is there a pattern to the words changing? Like ko is I too (I think)
yes!
we also have forms of 1st-person, 2nd-person, and 3rd-person pronouns
Ohh
yes, that is correct, in spoken Tagalog, we always shorten what we are saying!
For example:
Formal written: Nasaan ka na ba ngayon ?
Shortened: Sa'n ka na ngayon ?
(Where are you right now?)
Is saan simply just a shortened form of nasaan
How do these work
*nassan
Nasaan
yes! "saan" is just a shortened form of "nasaan" but you can take it one step further and shorten it to "sa'n" for more efficient speaking 😆
reducing it to one syllable
Sooo is ko just ako shortened and you can choose? Or do they mean different things?
Same with kayo/ka/ikaw. Are they used as the same meaning or no?
yes you can, but add a particle « na » to indicate the subject:
Saan ka na ba ?
(where are you now?)
Saan ka ba ?
(where are you at?)
Saan ka na ?
(where are you now?)
in this language, grammatical particles are powerful (ils ont très fort !! ) 🔥
But it’s like in what direction they’re powerful 😂
I think the middle sentence is what I’d prefer to mean, without the now, but that one is wrong right?
Correct! "ko" is a shortened form of "ako" but is used differently and has a different grammatical usage:
"Ako ay may lobo"
(I have a balloon)
"Sayang ang pera ko"
(My money is wasted)
I used a popular Filipino nursery rhyme to demonstrate an example! 😆
"Ako ay may lobo,
lumipad sa langit
'di ko na nakita,
pumutok na pala.
Sayang ang pera ko
pambili ng lobo,
kung pagkain sana,
nabusog pa ako"
The middle phrase isn't technically wrong, but it has a different meaning without the particle 😊
I have a balloon,
It flew in the sky
I can't see it anymore,
It just suddenly popped
My money is wasted,
that I used to buy the balloon
If I spent it on food,
then I won't be hungry no more
nursery rhymes 😍
Cuz if I don’t care if it’s right now or not
That’s kinda sad
As many nursery rhymes are
It's not sad, the moral lesson is to teach young children the importance of needs and wants
It refers to asking someone where that person is regardless of time, usually adding verbs to emphasize:
"Saan ka ba (pupunta?)"
(Where are you going?)
"Saan ka ba (kakain?)"
(Where are you going to eat?)
"Saan ka ba (mamimili?)"
(Where are you going to shop?)
Ohh ok
I thought it was like their last dollar and now they’ll starve
I hope this is clear to you!
(Sana malinaw 'to sa'yo!)
Thanks!!
no, it's not, it's about prioritizing one's needs before the wants to children!
Also, Filipino particles can also determine meaning. Let's have the particles "na," "pa," and "ba"
"wala pa"
(It's not there yet)
"wala na"
(It's gone/It's gone now)
"wala ba?"
(Is there nothing?)
walang problema! (il n'y a pas de quoi!)
Alors, je suis aux philippines à l'instant
C'est un trop chaud après-midi ! 🔥
Kamusta naman ang iyong pag-aaral sa wikang Filipino?
😂 c’est drôle parce que la Filipino est plus facile à comprends que le français
Ooo sympa! (Mabait? Or wrong context. Peut-être mabuti)
nah, ce n'est pas vrai, le langue est très compliquée MDR 😆
Parce que problema est comme anglais
Et je sais cette phrase
The French here makes less sense translated as an expression.
talaga ba ?
(really?)
Yeah
"mabuti naman!"
Filipino : ______ problema (easy guess to no problem)
French: it is not of what
The French just isn’t an English phrase
"mabait" refers to a nice/good person
I had to look some up. But not well 😂
in general
But mabuti can describe a situation ?
yes! It can be used as follows:
Mabuti naman na nakauwi siya nang maayos.
Siya ay isang mabuting tao.
it can describe a situation, a state, behaviour, affirmation, character, atbp.
I swear the Filipino language has so many ways of conjugating verbs 🥹
« very Good you »
« You good »
What I remember lolol. soo hard to remember
Mabuti naman na nakauwi siya nang maayos.
(I thank that he/she went home safely.)
Siya ay isang mabuting tao.
(He/she is a good person.)
Take for example the base verb "kain:" (to eat)
Here's the infinite ways you can conjugate that:
kain
kakain
kumain
kinain
kumakain
kinakain
kainin
kakainin
kakainan
kainan
pagkain
pakain
hapag-kainan
pinagkainan
kinainan
magpapakain
magpakain
pinapakain
pinakain
nagpakain
nagpapakain
marami pang iba...
(etc.)
any questions...? 🤣
that's just a little bit
oui et comme le français, il y a des exceptions dans la langue et differences de conjugation pour chaque mot. pour moi, hindi ko alam lahat. i just go based on vibes and what feels right LOL
C'est vrai! 😀
I know right, sometimes those expressions are just fixed in French
Im gonna go through all my messages here to make flashcards. This is a bookmark for me
New bookmark
Here are some base forms of common verbs (these are not conjugated yet, but let me know if you want to see me conjugate it in different forms!) :
*Some of these can turn into nouns if you conjugate it in a way:
maging (to be)
mayroon (to have)
gawa (to do/to make)
sabi (to say)
kuha (to get)
punta (to come)
alis (to go)
alam (to know)
tanggap (to take/receive/get)
kita (to see)
isip (to think)
tingin (to look)
gusto (to want)
bigay (to give)
gamit (to use)
hanap (to find)
sabi (to tell)
tanong (to ask)
trabaho (to work)
"alis" is similar to "aller"
"trabaho" is similar to "travailler"
Punta is to go to, not come
It's somewhat like the difference between sortir (punta) and partir (alis), I think.
oopsie! my bad! 😄
Thank you!! I think I’m not ready for conjugation yet
pas de problème! mais ces quelques mots peut avoir conjugaisons étrange!
walang problema! pero 'yung mga iilang salita ay may kakaibang "porma"
*tout 😁
puis-je donner vous un exemple ?
Sure!
prends par exemple:
« maging » (to be)
ako ay (I am)
ikaw ay (you are)
siya ay (he/she is)
kami ay (we are)
sila ay (they are)
ito ay (it is)
These will also change meaning when a specific particle is added next to it!
Ako ay pogi
Ces sont super! Si tu peux, tu peux envoyer plus conjugaisons de autres mots
That's correct, kinda like:
Il est beau - "Siya ay pogi" (masculine)
Elle est belle - "Siya ay maganda" (feminine)
bien sûr! mais si t'es intéressée avoir un conversation avec moi! donc, pwede naman ako gumamit ng mga salitang 'yan in a conversation ! 😀
la pluie est très forte ici 🌧️
le ciel est malheureux
D’abord, je peux practice ces mots avec flashcards
Maybe I can use a few of them. But I don’t remember many of the verbs yet
Allo peepz
allô à vous!
Hi
hi
Uy. Ayos kayo lang?
Hmm, did you actually mean that?
"Ayos, kayo lang" could be taken as: Nice, only you(plural)? [Are you the only ones here?]
Meanwhile, "Ayos lang kayo" would be taken as: Are you(plural) okay? [Is everything fine?]
Lol yeah I said it wrong, I realized afterwards when doing flashcards
But I forget what the correct version was
I meant to greet everyone
I actually meant to say “Kumusta kayo,” but I mixed two phrases together
May Tagalog pala rito. Musta kayong mga Noypi!
Itong channel para ba sa m'ga taong gustong matuto ng Filipino o usapan lang?
