the verb « retenir » isn't part of the second-group verbs

it's an irregular verb from the third group

in fact, lots of verbs that end in –enir are irregular and follow their own conjugation pattern

like « venir », « tenir », « devenir », etc...

as i think i know why you made this mistake, i'll add that not all -ir verbs are in the second group

By just looking at an -ir verb's infinitive form? no.

the way we (in France) learn it is: 2nd group is composed of -ir verbs that end with "-issons" with "nous"
