Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
the verb « retenir » isn't part of the second-group verbs
it's an irregular verb from the third group
in fact, lots of verbs that end in –enir are irregular and follow their own conjugation pattern
like « venir », « tenir », « devenir », etc...
as i think i know why you made this mistake, i'll add that not all -ir verbs are in the second group
there's a way to know better what is from second group and what is from the third group?
in my opinion, the only true best way is memorization
By just looking at an -ir verb's infinitive form? no.
