Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

« ...mais personne ne l'a remarqué »

#

since the negative pronoun « personne » is used, we also need to use the negative adverb « ne »

#

this happens with all negative constructions
e.g.

  • ne... pas
  • ne... plus
  • ne... jamais

i thought personne by itself meant nobody tho?

#

or does it literally have to be by itself, eg

#

qui est ici? -> who is here
personne. ->nobody

In a sentence with a verb, “personne” requires “ne”.

don't think of it in terms of direct translation

ne?

#

how you explained it

#

It was explained differently to me

#

("always goes before the verb")

ruby vigil
#

how was it explained to you

gloomy fjord
#

Just that when the second element of a negation like jamais or rien is the subject of the phrase, it goes to the beginning of the sentence instead of after the verb .

ruby vigil
#

that's talking about rien, personne, etc. and seems fine

#

i mean when anything is the subject of a sentence it goes before the verb (well not always)
