It's not really a function but more just meaning. Since « faire » means the act of performing something and verbs describe people performing something, you can think of « faire » as a sort of umbrella verb

For example, « marcher, penser, parler » can be understood as performing the action of walking, thinking, and speaking, and « faire » is the act of performing, so we're just taking the focus away from the specific action and more on it being performed
