Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

they aren't. "y" takes the place of the place you are going to : "il faut combien de temps pour arriver à Genèves ?" and "il faut combien de temps pour y arriver ?" are the same

The latter doesn't mention a place, it only focuses on the act of arriving.

however when you say "il faut combien de temps pour arriver" you miss the location

Only the first is right because arriver needs a complement/object, and there’s none in the second.

#

Pour arriver à quel endroit ou à faire quoi ?

Oh you’re both right, I was thinking of « aller » needing a complement

@fluid ivy Both are grammatically correct but they are used in slightly different contexts

#

« Il faut combien de temps pour y arriver? » means "How long does it take to get there?"
The word "y" refers to a specific place that has already been mentioned or is understood from the context.
« Il faut combien de temps pour arriver ? » means "How long does it take to arrive?"
It is more general and does not specify a destination

#

The short answer is, the first sentence is used when the destination is known or has been mentioned, while the second is more general and can be used without a specified destination

Yeah I use your questions as tests. When I saw this question for example my first thought was “I should know this one, I’ve learned it before”
