The adjective « ancien » can change its meaning depending on its placement.

When placed before the noun, it means "former".
e.g. Mon ancien professor de chimie a été viré.
-# - ("My former chemistry professor was fired.")

When placed after the noun, it means "ancient".
e.g. Ce monument ancien est magnifique !
-# - ("This ancient monument is magnificent!")
