Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
'Qui' is for the subject:
<La chose) me fait mal.
Qu'est-ce qui me fait mal ? La chose.
A trick I use for this is usually whenever it’s followed directly by a verb it’s qui

Explain to me what is causing you pain
So the ‘what’ is the subject and it is causing pain to ‘you’

My English explanation might be wrong but yeah, in French the qui is used because vous is a pronoun here
Ce qui fait mal à vous
And à vous is replaced by vous
Because the action (to cause pain) affects you (vous), vous is the direct object and not the subject.
