For me est and et are not the same. Et like a roughly like you said
And est is like รจ
many people in France would pronounce both as /e/
but it's possible to pronounce est as /ษ/ as well
neither sounds just like the letter "a" is pronounced (except in some dialects, potentially)
When people pronounce both the same I find it hard to distinguish what I am hearing
