Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
I think masculine since it’s used for mixed nouns too
it would default to masculine
but if the category itself is masc or fem you would just use the gender of the category
Category? Could you explain more?
If you’re taking about cars it will always be “laquelle”, for instance
Oh interesting though I can't think of any situation where there's a difference between the nouns' genders but not their category
it's pretty rare, but it could happen
Do you mean something like, « J'ai beaucoup de chaises disponible. J'ai des fauteuils et des tabourets, lesquelles est-ce que vous préfériez ? » where we use « lesquelles » because it refers to « chaises » ?
on a plusieurs sauces, du ketchup, de la mayo, de la moutarde - laquelle préfères-tu ?
(I did a quick Google search for various terms of chairs)
ohhhh that makes sense
you'll probably have already stated the noun that is the category, but I could imagine a situation where it's just implied
makes sense
