Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
It is yes, the construction is a reflexive causative, « se faire payer ».
||We make ourselves pay generously for our confessions / We are made to pay generously for our confessions||
Ah, that's a french structure. I read the site you sent, so I understood if I wanna use it, it is always: (object pronoun) + faire + (verb) + (predicative if it needs one), right?
Yup, works
You might want to make sure you read the previous page correctly, the general causative, and the next one about object agreements
Just to get a more informed view
Hello, I needed to sleep. If I understood it correctly, are the following phrases I wrote correct?
- Je me fais dessiner une fleur.
- Il a fait connaître la Chole par le Thomas.
- Mon père fais chanter ma mère.
- Tu fais réparer l'ordinateur.
Il a fait connaître la Chole par le Thomas.
I don't know what you mean by this.
Mon père fais chanter ma mère.
Okay, so other than it should be « fait » since this is the third-person, nothing about this is technically incorrect. However, « faire chanter qqn » has the meaning of 'to blackmail someone' so this sentence will be understood as, 'My father is blackmailing my mother'. I personally would reword this into something like: « Mon père encourage ma mère à chanter (My father is encouraging my mother to sing) ».
Otherwise, all good.
« Je me fais dessiner une fleur (I am made to draw a flower) »
« Tu fais réparer l'ordinateur (You had the computer repaired) »
I read about that here (agent and receiver causative). And I didn't know faire chanter qqn would mean to blackmail someone 😅 I thought it would be "My father makes my mother sing", thank you very much
Right, the structure makes sense but the meaning is off. I don’t know what « Chole » is but « Thomas » is a name and names don’t carry articles unless they’re a brand.
Chole is other name, a girl
Yeah names don’t carry articles
« Il a fait connaitre Chole à/par Thomas (he made Thomas know Chole) » works
I got it
So:
- Je me fais dessiner une fleur.
- Il a fait connaître Chole à/par Thomas
- Mon père encourage ma mère à chanter.
- Tu fais réparer l'ordinateur.
Correct?
Looks good to me
