Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
how does "jouant" act as a noun?
@jovial geyser
we have « joueur », which is a noun and yes it takes an article, le joueur.
« jouant » is the participe présent of the verb « jouer » and can only be used as an adjective, in which case there is no article as it isn't a noun.
But for some verbs where the present participle can be used as a noun indicating "someone/something that does this", it does take articles as normal:
https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/present-participle-adjectives-and-nouns/
and see for a discussion of how the present participle in french is typically not used as a noun indicating the action, as it is sometimes in english:
ah oui, comme un contenant, effectivement c'est le participe présent utilisé comme nom...
it’s “playing
but not as a noun in most contexts...jouer will be used more as playing as a noun. Someone would say "jouer est amusant", for example, for "playing is fun"
That's an English word
Maybe I am mistaken. I thought I wrote the form that would typically be used, which used the infinitive...
Ah fuck sorry I just woke up
No problem, I appreciate it all the same :).
