the first one is a typo. It should be imperfect "elle était"

the second one, "ressentant", is correct though.
It modifies the subject using a verb that's acting as a continuous state. It basically translates to "-ing" in English.

"Elle était en avance par rapport aux autres élèves de l'école et très timide, ressentant un décalage avec les autres."
She was ahead of the other students at school and very shy, feeling out of step with the others.
