Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

i believe this is twofold - at a certain point in learning a language you need more than just absorbing the words by reading, you need to be putting it into practise by producing the language yourself in reading or writing etc

and also, i think fahrenheit 451 is rather advanced, unsure of your level but that could also be the case

Looking for others online, is not going well sadly…

books do tend to have a more poetic tone, more liberties with word order etc, while the news is made to transmit information clearly

#

i think most peoples' first books tend to be le petit prince

#

very digestible

#

that or le petit nicolas series, very cute and also accessible

#

but also - struggling isnt a bad thing necessarily. could be that you can use a first runthrough to digest it taking all the time you need and learning, and then following times will be refreshers :)

Merci! May i ask about your way of learning french? How you go about things? If its too much i understand :)

#

sure thing but unfortunately for the most part it was at school

#

we started taking lessons in year 7 and continued until year 11 with gcse exams, was roughly 3h vocab revision/learning phrases and reading etc and 2h learning grammar per week

#

then i continued for a-level and we studied a book and a film, it was really good to properly Apply my knowledge to talking about and analysing things

#

still 5h/week but only 1h grammar

#

outside of school i listened to a lot of music in french, watched the news in french, and changed my phone to french

#

id say i was at B2 level after maybe 2 years, sustained by the school classes

#

maintained that level until i officially took the B2 after 7 years (i remember learning very little new stuff at this time except for cultural points)

#

and now i passed my C2 exams last week heh

#

im not sure how good my french is but at the very least im comfortable speaking it hehe

#

acquisition is definitely very important (like you get through reading) but at the same time there was the support of it being regular (because i didnt have the choice mdr) and there was grammar practise to not get rusty

Wow thanks for the extensive reply! I will keep reading the news and books (if i can) and “throw” myself in the french language. Grammer i learn mostly from my book and chat-gpt because he explains everything immensely clear.

#

@wind karma

#

And congrats for passing the C2 exam!

#

and thank you :') unsure of the result yet but my prof has faith in me so it should be alright hehe

Chatgpt is generally super unreliable for grammar, we somewhat frequently get users asking for clarification on rules and corrections chatgpt pulls out of its ass
