Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
From my Canadian perspective, you're overthinking it a bit
est-ce que is totally normal in speech, there's no particular exception to the formality of the difference question forms in this case
And remember, French loves repeating the topic of a sentence and throwing in a dummy pronoun, e.g. "tornado ça se dit comment?" (you can throw it at the end of a sentence too)
"comment dit-on" is just school French, one of those phrases that lives on in a super overrepresented way, like comme ci comme ça
"comment on dit" might sound funny to you, but it is the most natural way to say it for me

I can count the number of times I've heard "comme ci comme ça" outside of school on zero hands
