Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
cant speak for french people but i would pronounce them a touch differently, not sure if i picked that up somewhere or if its my bad as a foreigner 🤭
like dirais i would enunciate the final i sound a tiiiiny bit more while dirai id more typically let it drop without complete and total enunciation
very keen to hear others input im sitting myself down with a coffee to camp and wait for responses xDD
Unless I misremembered:
- The suffix -ai sounds like é
- The suffixes -ais and -ait sound like è
Though it's not always observed and probably less common in casual speech.
Just to help distinguish the tenses in spoken French.
yeah i tested myself like 50 times on each variation to try to hear xD
You applied the scientific method. :D
damn i only wrote my findings after the fact im not sure if i mixed them up (repeats the test
the difference is primarily regional, but there is surely a socio-economic component like with any dialectical difference
the merger of the two sounds is often associated with the south, which is itself associated with poor education, so associating the reverse with high social standing isn't a huge jump

Am I the only one confused by that legend?
Oh, I get it now.
The fact that mangerai = mangerais was in the centre made it look like a title (the thing being graphed).
Using 100% for not at all the case seems counter intuitive to me, though.
I still don’t get it
Orange (100%) = the words have different pronunciations.
Purple (0%): the words are identical in pronunciation.
Mais ... C'est presque toute la France ..
Oh i meant reply to the diagram, i forgot there was more text below 🤣
Where can i search it up to hear the différence between these two conjugations
type diré and dirè into google translate
