Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
le tiers → a third of something
- j'ai pris le tiers du gâteau → I took a third of the cake
le troisième → the third - je suis le troisième fils de ma famille → I'm the third son in my family
i've just realized these are the same words in english
To clarify, it's the same difference as with half and second, quarter and fourth (though fourth can also be used for the first sense)
Un tiers is also une partie tierce (third party).
(Yes, tierce is the feminine version of the adjective tiers.)
Shouldn't "one third" be "un tiers"? So "j'ai pris un tiers du gâteau" ?
