Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Contexte ?

It seems to have a connotation of "anyway", "by the way" ? Is this observation any correct ?

stuck sleet
#

(Supply mais probably not supplie)

woven linden
#

(supplier veut dire to beg.)

Sinon, reprenons.

  • Fais ce que je te dis, sinon je vais te manger ==> Do as a say, otherwise I will eat you
  • Sinon, je dis pas que tu as tort ==> anyway, I'm not saying you're wrong

Dans la plupart des cas, ça se traduira par however ou anyway ou quelque chose de proche.

#

Oh, so it's indeed "anyway" in some cas3s

#

Then, it does have to be at the start of the sentence?

#

"If nothing else, here's some information" ?

Dans ce cas-ci, et sinon est employé comme enfin ou autrement voire cela dit. C'est un emploi assez étrange, et non standard, mais ça s'emploie de temps en temps dans la langue orale.

stuck sleet

Hmm

woven linden
#

No, it doesn't have to, but it is often at the start of a clause.

stuck sleet
#

I see

woven linden
#

like however.

Merci beaucoup ! C'est très clair !

woven linden

You could say, Sinon, tu fais quoi ce soir or Ce soir tu fais quoi, sinon ? and even ce soir, sinon, tu fais quoi ?

#

These are the only possibilities though, either in the middle after the nominal group between commas, or at the begignning/end.

stuck sleet
#

I dont what a nominal group is, but l'internet va suffire. Je vous remercie encore !

yea, I was hoping I wouldn't need to find the adequate grammatical translation. The noun's group or something.

I was writing something but my pc suddenly crashed.

I was responding to if nothing else, In this case, you have to understand sinon more like as if anything, in the meaning of I say X because Y. Like, switching from a subject to another. let's say something like

What do you think of the weather ?
if anything, I don't know anything about yours, but I was rather curious ==> normally, you'd translate this to enfin, je sais pas[....], but in this case, et sinon was chosen as a means to continuing the conversation, it's not a standard choice, but it will be understood easily by french people as if it was enfin or cela dit.

#

But, I'm having the feeling that I could be confusing you more than answering your question here.
