Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Nothing, neither work. « tant que » means ‘as long as (implying a sort of condition like Y will happen if X is true)’ and « comme que » means ‘since (implying a reasoning like Y will happen because X)’

#

What you’re looking for is « en tant que » which means ‘in the position of/acting as’

crystal pollen
#

Comme doesn't need to be followed by que, does it?

haughty merlin
#

I probably should’ve gone to bed instead of answering this, it’s midnight here

grim linden
#

oh thankss

#

what if it was en comme photographe

brisk kraken
#

en tant que

as (a); in the capacity of; in the role of

En tant que médecin, je vous le recommande.

As a doctor, I recommend it.

Il travaille en tant que traducteur.

He works as a translator.

Je suis ici en tant que touriste.

I'm here as a tourist.

grim linden
#

thanks

#

for my sentence

#

je prendrai les belles photos tant que une photographe

#

should it be les belles photos

#

is s needed on all? i know this question is kinda stupid

brisk kraken
#

not at all, its not a stupid question.
yes s is needed on the noun (photos) and the adjectives that describe it (belles)

#

also, the phrase is en tant que

#

you can't forget the en, because tant que is also a phrase that means something else 😅

grim linden
#

oh

#

what does it mean

#

MUCH of

#

is it?

brisk kraken
#

it is sometimes possible to use comme.

Elle travaille comme infirmière à l'hôpital.

She works as a nurse in the hospital.

Je me suis inscrit comme donneur de moelle osseuse.

I registered as a bone marrow donor.

#

tant que

as long as, while, given that

grim linden
#

is comme more like "like"

brisk kraken
#

right

grim linden
#

I registered** like** a bone marrow donor

#

a bit different from en tant que

#

because like is less certain, right? does this apply to french too?

brisk kraken
#

tant que tu es heureux

as long as you're happy

so tant que and en tant que have ompletely seperate meanings. be careful.

brisk kraken
grim linden
#

can u think of a case where comme is less certain?

brisk kraken
#

She works as a nurse in the hospital.

Elle travaille comme infirmière à l'hôpital.
Elle travaille en tant qu'infirmière à l'hôpital.

these mean the same thing

brisk kraken
#

no to be honest not off the top ofmy head

grim linden
#

thats alright

brisk kraken
#

you're welcome!

grim linden
#

i cant beleive my french teacher went through my work and said she'll correct mistakes but she didnt correct anything

#

and tomorrow i have the presentation..

#

when i went back and indivually asked her about certain things then shes like "yeah idk why u wrote that.. thats wrong"

brisk kraken
#

I will say that en tant que is more formal that comme.

grim linden
#

oh

brisk kraken
#

oh do you have other things that you want us to look at?

grim linden
#

so with my presentation should i just keep it as comme instead

#

its just a casual conversation about passe, present, et futur

#

a boite a souvenir, where i have to talk about 2 items from each time peroid

grim linden
brisk kraken
#

either would work 🙂

grim linden
#

i have another question

brisk kraken
brisk kraken
grim linden
#

what would "these are my most disered careers" be in french? would it be <<'c'est mes plus désiré**es **carrièeres>>

brisk kraken
#

the translation closest to your sentence would be

ce sont mes carrières les plus désirées

also, you could say

ce sont les carrières que je (souhaite / désire) le plus

grim linden
#

"these are my most desired careers" and "these are the careers that I desire the most"

#

okay thanks

brisk kraken
#

exactly

#

but note that its ce sont and not c'est since you are talking about multiple things

grim linden
#

yes

#

can i ask another question?

brisk kraken
#

sure as many as you would like

#

I have about 15 or so mins before I have to go but ill answer what I can 🙂

grim linden
#

oh okay thank you

#

“je serai gentil** auxs les** animauxs”

#

auxs or avec or what 😭

#

i know its not auxs and les

brisk kraken
#

je serai gentil avec les animaux
for me this is the most natural

grim linden
#

oh okay

brisk kraken
#

note that the x in animaux is the plural so you dont need another s on the end

grim linden
#

oh and how about the aux

#

would it be without s too since its plural?

brisk kraken
#

the same with aux, no s on the end

grim linden
#

okay

brisk kraken
#

à les becomes aux

grim linden
#

à is like at/going to?

brisk kraken
#

exactly

grim linden
#

je suis allé à l'épicerie par exemple

#

im feeling a bit smart lol

brisk kraken
#

thats exactly correct

grim linden
#

would the suis be needed

brisk kraken
#

no it was right before you changed it

grim linden
#

i wonder idk

brisk kraken
#

yes

#

it is an auxilliary verb used to make the passé composé

#

je suis allé -- I went

grim linden
#

okay thank you

brisk kraken
#

je vais -- I'm going

grim linden
#

that futur?

brisk kraken
#

thats current

grim linden
#

oh yes

brisk kraken
#

I'm going (as in right now i am going)

grim linden
#

ill go is future

brisk kraken
#

but we use aller to make the future in other verbs
je vais manger (I will eat; I'm going to eat)

brisk kraken
grim linden
#

je allerais?

#

i would go

brisk kraken
#

j'irais

grim linden
brisk kraken
#

unfortuntaely, aller is iregular so it doesnt conjugate how you would expect

grim linden
#

yea

#

j'irais is futur or conditional

brisk kraken
#

conditional i would go

#

the futur is j'irai I will go

#

or je vais aller

grim linden
#

how can i say it in conditional

grim linden
brisk kraken
#

right its for things you will do soon

#

je vais manger
means I will eat (soon)

#

je mangerai
means I will eat (later or at an unknown time)

grim linden
#

oh, thank u for the examples ❤️

brisk kraken
#

okay im sorry i have to go

grim linden
#

okay byee

brisk kraken
#

feel free to keep asking questions, ill be back in about an hour

grim linden
#

thanks for the help

brisk kraken
#

🙂

#

no worries my pleasure

grim linden
#

😊

brisk kraken
#

@grim linden i'm back if ever you have any more questions or need help with anything 🙂

grim linden
#

so im talking about my karate belt. ceinture de karate?

brisk kraken
#

yes i believe so although im not familiar with karate terminology but it makes sense 😅

grim linden
#

online it says karate is masc. but

#

on gogole tansalte its femimne

brisk kraken
#

its masculin, it comes from a foreign (in this case Japanese) word so it has to be masclin

grim linden
#

ohh

#

probably its ma ceinture because ceinture is fem.?

brisk kraken
#

exactly

#

its

#

la ceinture

grim linden
#

why is it club de karate then?

brisk kraken
#

im not sure I understand the question

grim linden
grim linden
brisk kraken
brisk kraken
#

de is just a word we use to connect things

brisk kraken
#

il est loin de moi

he is far from me

#

yes it has maaaany uses

#

club de karaté

club of karaté
karaté club

grim linden
#

oh ok

#

"c'est ma ceinture de karaté. il a base de marron et il y a un bande au noire"

#

thats what i wrote for

#

"this is my karate belt. it is brown and has a black stripe"

#

like this

brisk kraken
#

okay so two ways to say this

more naturally

c'est ma ceinture de karaté. elle est marron et a une bande noire

or similar to what you said

c'est ma ceinture de karaté. elle a une base marron et une bande noire.

grim linden
#

i feel like "bande au noire" is wrong since its probably not bande and possibly its **de **noire but idk

grim linden
#

the de and au are uneeded. im glad it is

brisk kraken
#

yes juste une bande noire

crystal pollen
#

In the case of a regular adjective qualifying a noun, de/au indeed aren't needed.

grim linden
#

like pink shoes

#

chausettes rose

brisk kraken
#

chaussures roses

#

but yes you get the idea

grim linden
#

ohh

#

yes

#

ty

#

chausetttes is socks

#

😭

grim linden
#

hey

#

can I have some help again?

#

<<chaque année, je recevais des médailles pendant le tournoi”

#

is this correct?

haughty merlin
#

Yes

grim linden
#

tysm

grim linden
#

I’m a girl, does that make it gentille?

haughty merlin
brisk kraken
#

yeah sorry I didn't think about that 😅

grim linden
#

guys

#

I just realized

#

it’s “j’ai vu”, “j’ai bu”, “j’ai fini” the ai (auxiliary) is always needed

#

I thought they weren’t needed if it was irregular avoir passé composé

brisk kraken
grim linden
#

oh I meant irregular verbs like boire doesn’t follow the rule of -re and add a u

#

it isn’t boiu it’s bu

#

I have my French exam tomorrow 😭

#

how do I do futur proche?

haughty merlin
#

Je vais partir
I am going to leave

Je partirai
I will leave

brisk kraken
#

Je vais manger
Tu vas manger
Il / elle / on va manger
Nous allons manger
Vous allez manger
Ils vont manger

#

Like this ↑

#

Change manger for the verb you want

grim linden
#

okay thanks ❤️

#

grim linden
#

Im scared guys

#

haughty merlin
#

dw you got it

#

grim linden

grim linden

brisk kraken
# grim linden Im scared guys

i'm not sure when you're exam is. unfortunately, I'm gonna be busy today, but, if you have time before your exam (maybe tomorrow?) and of course, you want to, I'm sure I could go through some of the topics with you and ask you some questions, etc.

#

if you wanted of course, no pressure.

#

but like bertie says, I'm sure you've got this 🙂

grim linden
#

It went well!!

#

I understood everything on my exam

#

(don’t want to jinx it though)
