simplement. there's no sure-fired way to get vocabulary power but I have found that reading in every language for every learner is a big helper when it comes to expanding your vocabulary. watching tv in French with subs and looking up whatever you don't understand. It is a love affair. Just that. You need to have the passion and desire to do it because for a lot of people it is boring. In my case ,it is a passion. I love the word.

I can't give you any recommendations. I started with a big novel. but it is not common. go with easy books first. cartoons books for children until you feel comfortable and solid enough to take on a challenging writer. Read lyrics if you like music[not rap]. That is another way to get simple French.

I would not advise you for sure to read Victor Hugo before you read Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve.
