Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

The correct version is
je peux, but
puis-je

@broken scaffold
quasiment and environ are synonymes, they mean basically the same thing, but we use them differently.

quasiment / presque -- almost
environ -- roughly, around, about

quasiment expresses that something is almost identical. It is like presque.

  • la copie était quasiment parfaite.
  • il était quasiment impossible de la reconnaître.
  • j'étais quasiment sûr de ma réponse.

environ, is used to show an approximation of quantities.

  • il y avait environ 200 personnes à la conférence.
  • cela coûte environ 10 euros.
  • le train arrive dans environ 30 minutes.

Thanks bro

#

Now I know the diffrence between quasiment/presque and environ

#

What about puis-je can't I just say peux je?

#

And what about centaine what does it mean

dusky gazelle
broken scaffold
#

Any appearant reason?

#

Or is it just french being french?

dusky gazelle
#

Mostly the second one. The most used verbs in a language tend to be very irregular and prone to exceptions due to heavy use. I believe "puis" is the historical conjugation for "pouvoir". It evolved with time but kept this form with inversion

Alright

#

What about centaine

#

Whats the diffrence between centaine and environ cent

dusky gazelle
#

basically the same difference as "about twelve" vs "a dozen"

broken scaffold
#

So they are nearly the same thons?

#

Thing*

#

First time for me to know about dozen

#

I thought it means alot

#

Like there is a dozen more

#

Alot more

#

Dozen means a group of twelve?

dusky gazelle
#

dozen is mostly used for eggs, typically sold by groups of 12.
The thing about douzaine, centaine, millier, etc is that they focus on the fact that it's a group. Not individual parts that happen to be a certain number
