Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
You need to make a subordinate clause with a new subject
Can you give me an example? I am really confused with this subject
The structure here is « être [adjectif] … ». The blank uses « de » when the following clause is the same subject or « que » when it's not
« Je suis heureux de pouvoir venir (I am happy to be able to come) »
The person who is happy is also the one who is able to come, therefore « de » is used.
« Je suis heureux que tu puisses venir (I am happy that you would be able to come) »
The person who is happy is different from the one who is able to come, therefore « que » is used.
Oh ok, What if I use it this way: Il faut que d'aille travailler
Notice also that in the first example, the parts that came after the blank are incomplete, they do not constitute a full clause (subj + verb at the minimum), whereas in the second one, the parts that came after the blank are complete (there's a subject and a verb)
That doesn't work. There's two things in play here:
(1) « Il faut » has a slightly different structure. If the clause is incomplete (the subject is the same), there's no preposition: « Il faut partir ».
(2) You must have a new clause with a different subject after « que ».
Moreover, « d'aille » just doesn't work work you can't have a finite conjugated verb (finite meaning that the verb is conjugated according to person, number, tense, etc) after a preposition.
Im kinda lost with how to use it with " Il faut que", how would be the correct way to do it with the first sentence I showed_
Again, « que » requires you to put a different subject.
Ex:
« Il faut partir »
« Il faut que tu partes »
In the first example, there is no subject, just a verb, so no subjunctive. In the second example, there is a new subject so the subjunctive is triggered.
In general, you should put « que » the moment you have a new clause with a new subject.
Examples:
« J'espère pouvoir y aller / J'espère qu'il peut y aller »
« Il veut connaitre la vérité / Il veut que tu connaisses la vérité »
il faut que j'aille travailler
Sorry if Im being kinda difficult Im new to the language
That works!
