Are you talking about sentences like "j'ai 20 ans." ?
If that's the case, "an" is a year. To say one is X-years old in French, you have to say they "have X years".

Well.. when you're talking about years and the word "years" happens to be at the end of the sentence.

For example: "I lived in France for three years" ==> "J'ai vécu en France pendant trois ans"
