Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Nous et on prennent de différentes conjugaisons ; « nous » a sa propre conjugaison (la première personne au pluriel) pendant que « on » a la conjugaison de la troisième personne au singulier.
Il/elle/on prend
Nous prenons
Conjugation means that every person has its own verbal form. For example, the first person plural (nous) form of the verb « être » in the present tense is « sommes » whereas the second person singular (tu) form is « es ». These forms are fixed so you can’t reverse them and say, « tu sommes / nous es », that doesn’t work. The pronoun « on » is the third person singular and so takes its form: « est » using the verb « être » whereas the pronoun « nous » is the first person plural and takes its appropriate form « sommes ».
This means that though « on » often replaces « nous » as a subject pronoun, their conjugations cannot mix. Therefore, « on est » and « nous sommes » are two valid ways to say ‘We are’ even though the conjugation is different.
No worries. Do note that there are more nuance to this, especially when it comes to past participle agreement, but that should be the basics.
