Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
musée is masculine?
Parce que c'est dérivé du Latin, où c'était masculin.
It is taken from Latin, where it is a masculin word, so French has kept it as masculin even though it ends in ée.
There are many such examples in French. Words that look like they should be masculin but are not, and vice-versa.
Fremch is drunk
la question
le problème
etc
don't worry, it's normal to mix up the gender of nouns as a beginner and even intermediate.
everyone will understand you, but you will learn them naturally as time goes on.
you're welcome
Lots of masculine nouns end in ée
Lycée, mausolée, apogée
Gender isn’t determined by spelling, it’s simply a part of the noun
le mausolée is another example of a Latin word that has kept its gender even though the spelling changed
