Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

That being said, I do notice that with short monosyllabic months like mai and août*, the second form « au mois de X » appears more often, perhaps to clarify and/or emphasise the month.
*août has different regional pronunciations that render it sometimes not monosyllabic
