Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
For both, the real key here is just repetition. If you're told to memorise these words for whatever reason and just that, just repeat the words until they stick. But really if you're memorising for the goal of understanding, the best way is to use them and use them in context. So, for example, I might be given a verb like « sortir » and I'm told to memorise its usage. Okay, so I make sentences or at least take some sentences online from sites like Linguee or Reverso Context: « J'ai sorti la poubelle plus tôt, elle se situe en dehors de la maison maintenant; Marc partira dans une heure à une boîte de nuit avec ses potes; une fois qu'elle était partie, elle a décidé de rentrer chez elle; etcetera. »
The goal is to be able to use it practically, I figured that doing brute force tactics like writing and speaking going to be the best
the guy who responded gave a pretty perfect answer haha. I have the worst memory possible, and for vocab words I usually just hand write them repeatedly, as much as possible, until it just gets engraved into my brain haha
lol
Well yes but you're not going to understand what it means unless you use it in context. You can repeat « sortir » all you want until it sticks in your mind but you're going to have a hard time conjugating and using it in a sentence. For example « sortir » is a verb that can either take the auxiliary verb « être » or « avoir » depending on the intended meaning and the presence of a direct object, and that's a distinction you may not realise and/or understand unless you use it in context.
ic
well
ig I have to just be making a conscious effort to actually use the word
"C'est la vie"
I am in french 1 rn
I am cooked for french 2
i mean i usually suck at memorizing conjugation. I usually look at my answer and if it sounds right then its correct, heh. But ig my teachers really tried to teach me the exceptions, so i would say.. if you're trying to master conjugation you gotta look out for the exceptions (there are soo many)
honestly "putin" conjugations
My techer be like: "Serge OMG you got the gender and conjugation wrong tu échoues"

oops
trait d'union.
oh ic
Not really…
Most exceptions in conjugation lie in the present tense and it's not that bad.
oh ok dont trust me i suck at french
im doing passe simple atm haha and the amount of weird endings trips me up bad. Because even if you say it out loud it sounds weird even if it's right
I mean I'm not trivialising here, when you're learning sure it's a pain in the arse but it's not that bad
Your brain definitely adjusts and starts to look out for patterns. At some point, your subconscious will have understood the patterns and you can start conjugating on the fly.
For good reason, it's not used in 90-95% of contexts
true true. except we do the same tenses each year and i forget it immediately after a test. i can't conjugate futur simple even though i've done it since elementary school
To be fair, sometimes you need explicit call-outs and reasonings to make it click
what made the simple future and present conditional click for me was, 'avoir in the present and imperfect'
i have been trying to make sense of that for like five minutes. i dont get it bless my stupid heart 😭 could you explain?
wait
Pour la majorité de verbes, le futur simple est simplement l'infinitif comme thème plus les conjugaisons du verbe avoir au présent comme terminaison.
exemple: parler
parler + ai = je parlerai
parler + as = tu parleras
parler + a = il/elle/on parlera
parler + (av)ons = nous parlerons
parler + (av)ez = vous parlerez
parler + ont = ils/elles parleront
Pour les verbes qui se terminent en -re, on supprime la lettre E avant d'ajouter les terminaisons
Exemple: rendre -e => rendr-
rendr + ai = je rendrai
rendr + as = tu rendras
rendr + a = il/elle/on rendra
rendr + (av)ons = nous rendrons
rendr + (av)ez = vous rendrez
rendr + ont = ils/elles rendront
Ça s'applique aussi au conditionnel présent où on utiliserait plutôt les conjugaisons du verbe avoir à l'imparfait comme terminaison.
parler
parler + (av)ais = je parlerais
parler + (av)ais = tu parlerais
parler + (av)ait = il/elle/on parlerait
parler + (av)ions = nous parlerions
parler + (av)iez = vous parleriez
parler + (av)aient = ils/elles parleraient
rendre -e => rendr-
rendr + (av)ais = je rendrais
rendr + (av)ais = tu rendrais
rendr + (av)ait = il/elle/on rendrait
rendr + (av)ions = nous rendrions
rendr + (av)iez = vous rendriez
rendr + (av)aient = ils/elles rendraient
why the heck did no one tell me this before?
The stem is regular except for like 20 verbs: « acquérir (acquerr-), aller (ir-), avoir (aur-), courir (courr-), devoir (devr-), envoyer (enverr-), être (ser-), faire (fer-), falloir (faudr-), pleuvoir (pleuvr-), pouvoir (pourr-), savoir (saur-), valoir (vaudr-), venir (viendr-), voir (verr-), vouloir (voudr-) »
