Please be patient

Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.

Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`

Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Is xiao ma the guy interviewing?

scarlet gyro
#

Yes

opaque rampart
#

lol, he's one of those youtube polyglots, I guess?

scarlet gyro
#

Yep

opaque rampart
#

his French ain't great

scarlet gyro
#

The pronunciation is a little difficult to follow here

opaque rampart
#

whereas the guy who he's interviewing has really good pronunciation lol

#

pretty sure he's trying to say "ravi de vous rencontrer"

scarlet gyro
#

Oh okay ravir is a new one for me

#

That explains why I wasnt sure what he said there lol

opaque rampart
#

but his <r> is weird (probably because he's tried learning the "French" r but hasn't mastered it… would be better to just use any old r sound - say his native language's r sound, and he'd be easier to understand)

scarlet gyro

Yea I was pretty impressed with anthony blinken's french there

He's the US secretary of State

Goes to prove the saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none" because Blinken in just that short short sentence demonstrates a much better French ability

#

(Can you tell I hate youtube polyglots? lmao)

scarlet gyro
#

maybe with more of a focus on a few

#

Top of my list is

French (obviously)
Punjabi and Hindi
and Arabic

#

Just because those languages are incredibly common in my community

A lot of the content on youtube from polyglots is pretty crap though
lots of white people "surprising" non-white people with their supposed mastery of whatever their local language is
it's colonialist and strange

#

it's cool to want to learn many languages, but it's exceedingly rare for someone to get really good at more than 2 or 3
and getting really good (C1+) at just one or two allows you access to a heck of a lot more interesting cultural material than just getting to an A2 or a B1

Oof just watched that part of the video

#

Dude absolutely butchered it💀

#

Blinken speaks really well though

scarlet gyro

Especially when asking if blinken lived in france
