Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Comment ça se fait comme ça doesn’t exist @stiff arch
😯
What is an appropriate way to express it in French then?
"How come it became like this"
Comment ça se fait que ce soit devenu comme ça
Comment est ce devenu comme ça
Comment sommes nous en là
Comment c’est devenu comme ça
"Comment ça se fait" alone means "how come"?
This "soit" here is subjunctive?
Yeah
And what does using subjunctive achieve here? To express emotion?
But in spoken (informal) French you could easily hear comment ca se fait que c’est devenu comme ça
Humm
Lemme think abt it
There is a subjunctive because there is a “Que”
But
Right, but using subjunctive usually achieves something, like expressing doubt, suggestion, or emotion
Put en before sommes and we have a proper sentence.
« comment ça se fait que » can be translated as, ‘How it may be that’ and so with ‘may’ subjunctive pops up
The "en" here is "in", not "de qqch" right?
or more closely to English, ‘How can it be that’
Le but c’était de montrer les différentes manières de le dire dans différentes registres de langue
C’est vrai que qu’en français correct
Le en est mal placé
Not at all. The expression is "en être là". It's the adverbial pronoun, not a preposition. "En là" is stupid, là is already a location, you don't need to add en before it.
même dans un registre très informel je trouve ça très bizarre perso
jamais entendu à l'oral une phrase structurée comme ça
en être là means?
C’est comme donne moi le et donne le moi
end up there?
Yep. Literally be there (from the starting point).
So, I can say comment en es-tu là to mean how did you end up there
when you say
"how come like this?"
do you mean "How did this happen?"/"How did this come about?"
Yes
"how did you end up like this"
a simple way i can think of to say that would be "comment es-tu devenu comme ça"
i'm not sure about the other sentences though
I know you can say "what happened?" with "qu'est-ce qui s'est passé ?" but that's not really how did this happen
