Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.

Also just simply: "c'est quoi ça ?"
(I use these types of questions often when I'm talking to my teachers on italki. The word order sounds abrupt in English so I just want to make sure I'm asking politely I guess)

It’s a difference of register, so depending on the situation things may come off as rude (but really this is much less important than, say, the tu/vous distinction or using rude words like chier or foutre)
