Please be patient
Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Pro tip: you can rename the thread title with `.tr <thread name>`
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
There are three ways to ask a question in French: Inversion, est-ce que, and intonation. Say we have this sentence, « Tu veux du café (You want some coffee) ». If we want to turn that into a question, we can do one of three things:
- Inversion
The formal way of asking a question: you reverse the position of the subject and the verb. In every case where there exists some form of inversion, you add a HYPHEN.
Tu veux du café -> Veux-tu du café ? - est-ce que
The neutral way of asking a question: just add « est-ce que » before the subject.
Tu veux du café -> Est-ce que tu veux du café ? - Intonation
The informal way of asking a question: just say it over with a rising tone at the end.
Tu veux du café -> Tu veux du café ?
the link I sent (blue part) is LawlessFrench, generally an excellent resource for learning
