Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
Simple questions like this are best answered by a bilingual dictionary: https://www.wordreference.com/fren/gomme
Thanks for the reply but I've looked it up as well. Apparently it's not clear whether it's still in use or not. I don't know why but I couldn't manage to find a single source that uses "gomme" as gum. Please let me know. Thanks!
That's right, that's why I am here.
So, yes, it means gum
It is probably not in use.
Why wouldn't it be in use?
I apologise for insisting but probably because the language has another word for "gum" which is the primary one for it TBH.
That's why I am concerned, otherwise I'd memorize it anyway.
Well, here's the deal
it definitely means gum
but it might not be the kind of gum you're thinking of
Lots of examples here
What's even this?
That's not a chewing-gum.
A dictionary
You said "gum"
- You did not specify
- Read?
If you're gonna retcon us and tell us you mean chewing-gum, well
Of course, my apologies.
I am Mongol, I didn't know "gum" and "chewing gum" were different.
I've already read it from Oxford's. I'd be happy to do the same for Wiktionary too. No worries.
in France we use the word chewing-gum 99% of the time
for chewing gum, yep
maybe old people say gomme idk
"la gomme" might be a little different though? If I am not mistaken.
Alright, fair enough.
Context™️
if you're talking about chewing gum, I've never heard "gomme" used in France
That's what I was asking for but I couldn't manage to express myself properly since English is not my native tongue either.
I don't encounter the word enough to really know what we say here
Gomme would not surprise me
Chewing-gum sounds super frenchie
pronounced "shwing-gum" lol
shwingom
You were asking for sources so I gave one which included a citation from 2023 for the chewing gum meaning, and then you were like "this isn't chewing gum" is all
That's gum, resin, it looks like
something important that you're going to need to get good at if you're serious about language learning is using dictionaries and reading them carefully
it's a skill that advanced language learners all have
you look up the word in a dictionary, compare that to another source, open up wikipedia and check there, then maybe do a google image search to confirm
it's all part of the process
I'd definitely check that citation out. Thanks for letting me know. 🙏 I thought "gum" and "chewing-gum" were all the same. My apologies.
All I understood from "gum" were these:
That's why I was surprised at first...
Notable tips... I've done my Google image search and I couldn't manage to find a chewing gum (those colourful or blue/white ones) for the word "la gomme" and that's where I was worried about the word itself TBH. Then, as soon as I checked the translator, I knew there was another primary word for "gum". Not being aware of the differences between the two made it harder too. Thanks a bunch for the tips and these precious replies of yours.
