It's the same as the difference between imperfect and perfect in that the imperfect implies that you no longer do it whereas the perfect implies something happened in the past and that change stayed with you.

« Je pensais qu'elle était fiable. »
-> implies that you used to think she was trustworthy, but now no longer does.

« J'ai pensé qu'elle était fiable. »
-> implies that something made you think she was trustworthy, and it's likely you still do.

Since it's a more or less instantaneous action

Vs je pensais usually being about a belief

As it's not active so it's a longer term thing with no super clear beginning or end
