Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
no one answered me yet huh.

French doesn’t use question tags as much as english does
the intonation indicates whether there is a “question tag” or not
BUT
you can use “n’est ce pas”
Or “pas vrai”
He ate the cake right? - il a mangé le gâteau pas vrai?
He likes me no? Il m’aime bien non?
"tu m'adores, pas vrai?" "you love me, don't you?"
“Non”can be used too
Yeah
continue svp
He has never seen it before, have he? - il ne l’a jamais vu auparavant non or pas vrai
what if it was imperative
Keep in mind that
Even if French use “pas vrai” etc
They’ll often use intonation to say the same thing
They will nod or frown
It depends
so it is rare to see question tags in french?
alright, cimer mon mec!
yeah heard a lot of frenchies use it in games and movies, but does the question tag not change according to the statement?
Good question
like becomes affimative when the sentence is negative and vice versa?
It’s natural to me
Lemme think abt it
I don’t think so
You can also say
ou pas
or not?
yeah
Nvm ou pas is quite different
But it can be used when you’re less sure
It’s quite different
but shouldn't that translate to " have you already done that or not?"
Yeah
Ur right
but I get your point
merci beaucoup, tu a été d'une aide précieuse
Je t’en prie
can i ask another question?
Sure
what is the most common method of making questions in french
and what is qu'est-ce que exactly?
It depends on the situation
There are 3 levels of formality
first time I hear of this please explain
First one
With friends
Family
Dogs
Jk
Kids
Etc
pronoun + verb + (place, color etc )
Tu vas où?
This is the less formal way to ask something
First level
Is it ok?
Yeah but the intonation makes the difference
Tu fais tes devoirs (?)
alright next level.
Two intonations
First is a statement the second is a question
This sentence might not be the best exemple but you got it
2 : est ce que
You can use it with strangers, your teacher, etc but it’s not the most polite way to ask something but it’s acceptable
You can use it with friends too
Est ce que can be used almost in every situation
Alright?
tres bien, after it we use a normal statement, pas vrai?
aight so it is est ce que tu fais tes devoirs?
Yeah
And the third level is
Faites-vous ; prenez-vous ; penses-tu
It’s the most formal way to ask something
That’s why i used “vous”
hmm so we switch the verb and the pronoun
Exactly
i thought the most formal was est ce que, but I guess i was wrong
so what is qu'est ce que and how to use question words with the three methods svp
i would be elated if you told me about it
“Pourriez-vous” but you can’t use it in every situation
Could you - may you
In English
verb must be infinitive
Yeah
You used question tag only with the first
If you use « vous » you can use the first form even if you talk to you’re teacher, a stranger
Vous avez pris la voiture ? For exemple
question words like: quand, où,qui, que, quoi
Ah
not a question tag
Oh okey
Où est ce que tu vas ?
Où vas tu?
For the second and third form it is the same
Tu vas où ? / où tu vas ?
où tu vas?
Both
alright that's amazing
But not for quand
oh?
what does the y do there?'
Qui is like où
Qui tu prends ; tu prends qui ✅ both are correct
Quoi is like quand only at the end
Tu prends quoi ✅ quoi tu prends ❌
That’s it
quand est ce que tu vas? is ti correct
Something is missing
A place
For exemple
quand est ce que tu vas au club?
Yeah
quand vas-tu au club
It’s correct
Yeah
both wrong we need a y to indicate a place
Yeah
But
Quand tu vas au supermarché
So be careful
You can’t use quand at the beginning for a question
But for a statement yeah
Quand tu vas au supermarché, acheter une bouteille d’eau
When you go to the supermarket buy a bottle of water
Np
you can ask me about anything in english or arabic if you want
but I won't answer now cause I gotta go
Ty
à plus tard!
À plus tard
il a mangé le gateau ouais...?
