Our volunteers look into many questions every day; sometimes it takes them a little while to answer.
Make it descriptive, including relevant context, but also to the point. This way you improve your chances of getting a more relevant and specific answer.
c'est juste l'ordre de la langue! vous devez mettre le verbe dans le milieu. donc, c'est pour les verbes
svp corriger moi si je ne suis pas correct!
la seule fois où « ne pas » seront ensemble, c'est quand le verbe est à l'infinitif
par exemple...
- Merci de ne pas voler les chaises. ("Please do not steal the chairs.")
Mmhm, la personne au dessus de moi est correcte. It's just the order of it, where « ne … pas » wraps around the verb.
Do note that it wraps around the conjugated verb which is essential when you're doing the compound verbs. For example, in the passé composé verb, the conjugated verb is the auxiliary and so it wraps around just that.
Ex: J'ai écrit ce message -> Je n'ai pas écrit ce message
I've written this message -> I've not written this message
I've put that in the present perfect (I've written) over the simple past (I wrote) because the structure is more similar
Oh, and « ne … pas » doesn't really mean 'do not', it's closer to just… 'not'. It might make more sense at the beginning but it'd be a bad habit and it can mislead you
Ok that does make sense. Thank you for explaining! I’ll try not to think of it as “do not”. I feel like Duo makes it slightly confusing sometimes lol.
the problem with duo is that it doesn't really explain grammar, it just tells you if you're wrong
if you want a free language app to learn French, I'd recommend busuu instead
and bare in mind, it doesn't have to have "pas" at the end.
eg: "je ne sais* quoi'
It usually does need "pas" though, you can't just remove the pas willy nilly
